I found this in the Shelter shop. It is funny and sad, imaginative and quite eloquent. Ten year old Dorothy has spent her life trailing round the world with her English parents: her deppressive and unaffectionate mother and (occasionally) her stiff and old fashioned father. The family land up in a small town in upstate New York and she has to make her own way with the exotic and unpredictable neighbours. Dorothy's encounter with a small strange zoo and the eccentric group of women who run it bring her into contact with a new world, very different from any she has known before. It's a revelation.
