Loved this book. Burroughs is writer who is fluid and generous. His outrageous childhood is told with intoxicating humor and grief. I couldn't wait for this memoir-- after reading, "Sellevision," his hilarious debut novel a couple of years ago.
Promised this book to a fellow bookcrosser.
mailed this book to "strangerthantho" yesterday.
It's the very next item on my to-read pile.

Just came home from work and found this book in my mailbox. What joy (since I just finished a book last night and need a read).
I really liked this book. I found the writing clear, crisp, and funny as hell. In bed, reading the chapter about the tell-tale bowel movement, I could not stop laughing and my husband got very perturbed. It took me several deep breaths and a heck of a lot of composure to read on. I brought it along this weekend, while taking my girl scouts camping. I taught them to play cards (Spite & Malice) so I could finish the book this morning.
If you are a reader who is not afraid to look mental illness in the face, and can find humour in the totally bizarre -- then this book is a great read. But if you are "normal," and are afraid to recognize the neurosis around you -- you will be deeply disturbed by this book.
Sending to SCOUT-FINCH on March 10th '03.

Received this in the mail today from Greedyreader..what a coincidence, I was camping with Cub Scouts last weekend, but it was raining buckets so I was doing more damage control and less reading..sigh..
Will move this to the front of my TBR pile..and post it as available on the Forum when I'm done. Thanks,
Greedyreader!

Waaah. I did *not* like this book. I didn't find it funny at all - I found it depressing as hell, pretty ickky and I'd like to get it out of my house as fast as possible. So disappointed, I'd had it on my Wish List and was excited to read it. But so far I'm in the minority, so will follow Greedyreader's (and her 2 predecessor's) lead and offer it up to the Book Wish Forum..
4/15: sending to BCer Cray17...enjoy! (I guess...)

SCOUT-FINCH sent me this book in a trade. Thank you! I just finished reading a book and am ready for a new one, so this will be the next book I read!
I thought the author's observations of his early childhood and the descriptions of his interactions with his mother and his friend Natalie were hilarious. But I admit there were some truly dark, disturbing spots. Sometimes I asked myself "Could that have really happened?" (See the description by greedyreader of the tell-tale bowel movement - I read that chapter and had a totally different reaction.) I would like to read Sellevision someday and I hope Augusten keeps writing.
Sending to a BCer next week sometime.

Received book in the mail - added it to my TBR pile. I did put it on top because I've heard good things about it.
