Synopsis:

It is 1948. Japan is rebuilding her cities after the calamity of World War II, her people putting defeat behind them and looking to the future. The celebrated painter Masuji Ono fills his days attending to his garden, his house repairs, his two grown daughters and his grandson, and his evenings drinking with old associates in quiet lantern-lit bars. His should be a tranquil retirement. But as his memories continually return to the past -- to a life and a career deeply touched by the rise of Japanese militarism -- a dark shadow begins to grow over his serenity ...

Despite being Winner of the "Whitbread Book of the Year Award" , this book did not grab me. For me it was a waste of time (sorry to sound so harsh).

This was a wonderful book that i enjoyed reading very much. Ishiguro is such a talented writer that he manages to say as much by what he doesn't say as by that which he does say - his narrator recounts episodes that leave the reader to interpret, and his wry observations of shifting perceptions over a period of time are a true meditation on how we choose to interpret the past.
I am so lucky that i recieved this book as my Secret Santa! I only hope the next reader enjoys it as much as i did.
