This novel (of over 700 pages) is one of the last books to be registered that I received from friends in Maryborough to add to my read, register and release addiction.
First published in 1890, this edition has finally restored "the full text of the original edition with it's careful integration of the novel's predominant elements : the intellectual and the emotional."
Different cover art on my copy.

I found the book in a Half-Price Book store yesterday. I have yet to read it, but hope to enjoy it this summer sitting on my front porch. My home is a Victorian style home which fits in with the era of the book. I am amazed that the book found its way to a shelf in middle America! Once I've read it, I will follow up with my impressions.

Arduous is the main description that I would give this book. The story idea is good; the writing is not that of a skilled storyteller. Catherine Martin attempted to point out society's foibles (class structure and its associated restrictions)as did Edith Wharton; however, she lacked Wharton's great ability to write with beauty and subtlety while delivering sympathetic characters in a finely wrought plot. An Australian writer of Martin's time that is much more appealing is Miles Franklin (My Brilliant Career). I will likely take this book back to Half-Price Books in Indianapolis, IN, USA for retrade.

I just received the book and didn't read it yet. I need the book for University Final Exams and I have to hurry to read it. Thanks so much - the book was rather cheap and is in very good shape. I think this book travel thing is quite nice and I hope the previous owner is happy to see that his or her book travelled to Germany...
