This book generated a rousing book club discussion. I like a novel with a strong story and well developed characters. This one was obviously written by a poet, and while the language could be beautiful, it was also often ethereal and more evocative than substantive. Not to my taste, but I can understand why another might be captivated by the pathos and writing.

I read it and honestly do not know why it was on the list of 1001 Book you Must Read before you die. I thought there were so many more books that deserved to be on that list more.
