An unsettling psychological thriller - we gradually find out about the life of Louis Drax, a nine-year problem child.
I loved this book.

A real pager turner, I started this last night at about 11.30 - how silly I was up till about 2.30, but had to get some sleep so waited to finish it untill this morning (thankfully I'm on hols from work at the moment)I could hardly put it down. A fascinating exploration of the human mind and what it may be capable of, a really clever psychological novel. I am so glad I had the opportunity to read it.

Will be sending to Gothmarcus tomorrow - enjoy.

Arrived with me this morning... many thanks!

An interesting premise and a well-crafted story, but that's a far as my praise goes. It just didn't 'click' with me as much as I thought it would or it has done with other people.

Updated 19 August: On its way to loopy1.

I'm looking forward to getting into this book, which arrived safely while I was away.
An unputdownable book is just the thing I need to give me a break from studying!
Thanks, guys.

Journal Entry 8 by loopy1 from Herne Bay, Kent United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 7, 2005
I enjoyed this book, and enjoyed finding out the real story behind Louis's condition. The ending made me think, as well.

I'll be passing this on once I get an address. Thanks!

Apologies for the delay on this one - it's about to go in the post.

Sorry - meant to register this book's arrival sooner, but life got in the way

This is a strange, but compelling book and very easy to read. I didn't entirely anticipate the conclusion and loved the unfolding of complexity of the story.

Posted off yesterday, so hopefully the Xmas postal rush will be kind to it

Many thanks for sharing

Received this morning. Hooray!

Journal Entry 13 by Pookledo from Loughborough, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Monday, January 16, 2006
I found this book really difficult to read. The change of narrator in each chapter and the strange way of writing speech made it confusing to me, and helped me take ages to read this book.

Thanks for sharing though. I've heard the name of this book mentioned a few times and I'm glad I read it.

PMed Redjanet for an address.

I received this book in the post a few days ago. I apologise for the delay in journalling it but I was busy moving house and didn't have access to the internet! I will try to get to this book as soon as possible, but what with the move I'm a bit behind on my bookrays.

Another interesting read from Liz Jensen. Although I preferred Ark baby, this book did hook me in from the beginning with the very interesting premise of a boy in a coma who seems to be trying to communicate to the outside world in some sort of fashion. Unfortunately near the end the book got a bit too melodramatic for my tastes and sort of lost the plot, but it was still enough fun to keep me wanting to know what happened.

The book arrived here this morning, thank you. I'm really looking forward to reading it, I have two ring books to read first though as they arrived ahead of it. I'm in the middle of exams at the moment (for the next three weeks) so I may be a bit slower to read this than I would like, I promise I won't hold on to it for too long. I'll journal it again when I've read it.

I finished reading the book this morning so thought I'd come and journal it now. I found the story intriguing in the beginning but I soon realised what was going on with Louis. I still felt compelled to read to the end though as I was curious to know what would happen to him. The book was different than I had thought it was going to be but still very good. It was an easy read too, which I very much needed this past week!

I've already PM'd Mrsdanvers and received her address back so I'll get the book in the post as soon as I can.

I posted the book to MrsDanvers today by second class post so it should get there soon.

Journal Entry 19 by MrsDanvers from Aldeburgh, Suffolk United Kingdom on Wednesday, June 21, 2006
Very swift second-class post brought the book here this morning. I am keeping my head above water with rings/rays - just - this is number 4 on the pile.

I was reading this at the same time as another book written in two voices and I think that coloured my view of both books. I won't be doing that again!

I can't say I found this "unputdownable" as it says on the cover, but I was interested in finding out was what going on inside Louis' head, what really happened to his family and didn't see the twist coming at all. I found the latter part of the book overly melodramatic and didn't buy into the "communication from beyond" at all.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story and the exploration of morals and relationships within it.

Looking forward to this and to finding out what has spurred the comments here! Mrs Danvers comment has put ideas into my head - let's see if it's a red herring! This is TBR 3 (the next one looks like it might make my brain melt, so it'll be good to have an easy-to-read one afterwards).

Journal Entry 22 by Normy from Morecambe, Lancashire United Kingdom on Monday, July 31, 2006
I couldn't resist bumping this one up the TBRs, and when I discovered I'd picked up another copy of the brain-melting book at an OBCZ I was able to post it on and bump this one up the queue. I wsa so glad I did! I've just finished another excellent book, Nick Hornby's 'A Long Way Down' which was written in ~four~ voices, and with some strange grammar (one of the characters had trouble with grammar!), so the different voices and grammar weren't a problem.

I loved the story, I was coming up with hypotheses and wanting to test them against things that were obviously ~huge~ clues, and I couldn't quite solve the puzzle, then things started falling into place like a jigsaw. Enough pieces fell into place early on to be satisfying, but not so many that I didn't want to finish. I found myself wanting to stay up and finish the book, and it ~was~ difficult for me to put down (although I find 'unputdownable' to be over the top). I agree with a couple of other posters that the ending was somewhat melodramatic.

I was in a coma myself a long long time ago, and although it was just for a week it was a life-changing experience. It was nothing like Louis's experience, but I did recognise the 'wanting to hide' aspect that was referred to in the book. A couple of times I became vaguely conscious of the outside world, somewhere far far away, and didn't want to go back. It was like being in a lovely deep, comfortable, relaxing sleep, and groggily waking up to a stressful day ahead. I've never heard what it might be like for someone else to be in a coma, so the book was especially interesting (even though a fictional account).

Thanks Wilksie for starting the ring. If you PM me your address I'll post it back to this week.
