From the back cover:

They came from outer space - Mars, to be exact.

With deadly heat-rays and giant fighting machines they want to conquer Earth and keep humans as their slaves.

Nothing seems to stop them as they spread terror and death across the planet. It is the start of the most important war in Earth's history.

And Earth will never be the same.

I bought this book because I am such a book nerd that I wanted to read it BEFORE I saw the movie! I do not read many sci-fi books, but I really enjoyed this one. I had read The Time Machine by H.G. Wells several weeks ago and really enjoyed his writing style. This copy of the book also includes a short biography of the author as well as an introduction and afterword to the story. I learned that H.G. Wells is considered the father of modern science fiction and that The War of the Worlds was the first book to use the idea of invasion by aliens. SPOILER: When I read the part of the book about how the aliens were defeated, I thought, "That's so simple, it's brilliant!" It was completely unexpected.

I plan to read more books by H.G. Wells.

I just couldn't get into this - I'm having a bit of a book drought at the mo. One of my friends read it whilst I was reading another book and he really enjoyed it, so at least it kept someone happy.

I have just finished reading this book. I prefered the second of the book to the first which I didn't find very gripping. I think that when this book was written as it was a new idea it would have been thought of as exciting and a page turner. I have scored it a 6 more because of my over all enjoyment than the style of writing and story idea.
