In Victorian New England, Nicholas van Tassel falls in love with Etna Bliss, and this is the story of their life together, through courtship, marriage and estrangement. It's interesting and a little unusual to find a story like this told from the man's perspective, and the author cleverly manages to depict Nicholas in all his pomposity and self-delusion without ever making us dislike him enough to throw the book aside in disgust. The book left me wanting to read more from Anita Shreve.
