From back cover: "Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." With her grandmother's taunt, Louise knew that she, like the biblical Esau, was the despised elder twin. Caroline, her selfish younger sister, was the one everyone loved.

Growing up on a tiny Chesapeake Bay Island, Louise reveals how Caroline robbed her of everything: her hopes for schooling, her friends, her mother, even her name. While veryone pampered Caroline, Louise began to learn the ways of the watermen and the secrets of the island where they lived. She dreamed of working as a waterman alongside her father, but she found that her dream did not satisfy the woman she was becoming. Alone and unsure, Louise began to fight her way to a place where Caroline could not reach.

This journal entry contains SPOILERS.

This book won the Newbery Medal in 1981. I must say that this was NOT one of my favorite Newbery Medal books. I really liked the beginning of the story, but then somewhere around the middle it got strange. Sara Louise, the fourteen-year-old narrator of the story, thinks she is in love with Captain, her seventy-year-old neighbor. That was just weird to me! I feel the story went downhill from there. By the end of the story, when Sara Louise had escaped from the island and the shadow of her twin sister, I just didn't even care anymore. I will say that I felt badly for the grandmother, who obviously had Alzheimer's. However, since the story takes place in the 1940s, no one really knew what was happening to the grandmother; the twins just thought she was crazy.

Although I didn't care for this book, I will continue to read other books by Katherine Paterson. Her book Bridge to Terabithia is one of my all-time favorite children's books.

My sister found this book. The book caught her eye because her husband's name is Jacob. We were cleaning out the garage and found it. So now it is mine to read. Hopefully she lets me pass it on.
