Wow - scary photo! The copy I have has a much less scary photo!
Book passed to me by my boyfriend's sister. Hoping to read then release somewhere appropriate - maybe near water?
Back cover reads:
A young divorcee returns to the remote island of her childhood in Northern Canada to investigate the mysterious disappearance of her father. Flooded with memories, she is gradually drawn back into her past as the wild island exerts its elemental hold ...

I received this book today. Thanks again for the book, Rockratgirl. Looking forward to reading it!
If I remember correctly, Rockratgirl had some problems with her printer at the time she sent this book to me, so the book had only a handwritten note. I added a couple of BC labels to it - hope you don't mind, RRG.
In this book we get little glimpses of the main character's background and childhood at the same time when she is trying to find out what has happened to her father. Near the end of the book, where "the wild island exerts its elemental hold" , things get a bit odd...
Surfacing is continuing its journey - I mailed the book to Gyd today.

I've got it!! It's recovering right now from its long but fast journey. Thanks Myntti, for the book, for the nice postcard and for your handwritten note. I'm always happy when I get some note along with the book, then I can 'see' the real person in the other side of my computer.
I've just started another book so 'Surfacing' will have to wait a little bit to keep on moving(not much I hope).

Disturbing. I've enjoyed the dispassionate tone of the book. And it's been funny to read all the reviews at Amazon (Canada, US and UK)... it seems a book to be either hated or loved.
Ready to be sent next week to Texas. Hope you enjoy it, Cytronella! ;0)

I am not home to read this book, but wanted you to know it has arrived! I can't wait to get started on it! Thanks so much for sending it along!
This book heads to the top of my to be read pile, with a long two months ahead of me with lots of reading time, and another bookcrosser, lightwavz, waiting to read it after me. I'll journal again after reading . . .
Interesting early Atwood about a girl raised in the isolation of an island life, with uncomfortable forays into the public school system, though never the same one twice. She never felt connected to the school world, or the adult city that she eventually found herself in, and really, never connected to herself, until her father disappears from that remote island and she is forced to return there. then she finally faces the assorted truths of her past, present and future. After a brief period of craziness, she buries her ghosts and moves forward.
I though the last quarter of the book, when revalations about her life are coming fast and furious, was a bit hard to follw sometimes, but worth the effort. Atwood brings such a poets lyric to her work!
Sending this book on to lightwavz . . .

Talk about a funny karmic coincidence... I went out to the mailbox and found this book not five minutes after I sort-of panned Atwood's "Wilderness Tips" for another BookRing! I suppose this is the hint that I need to give her another remdemptive chance. Thanks for passing this one on, cytronella! I will give the full report and my renewed and updated opinion of Atwood when I finish reading this one!!
p.s. loved the envelope art! The Looney Tunes crew brought lots of laughter to the afternoon!!

No pun intended, but this one just isn't surfacing in the TBR pile. I don't think I am really compelled by the subject matter. I am going to keep it going in the BookRelay!
