I bought this book after watching the film but have had it sitting on my shelf for some time. Then I picked it for my first bookring and I'm very glad I did because I thought it was just wonderful! It’s set in a Canadian fishing town and is full of memorable characters bursting with local tales and gossip. The day-to-day runnings of the town really come to life, from the art of boat making to seal flipper pie! It is a wonderfully calm and collect story but with so much hidden emotion and the gradual transformation of Quoyle is a joy to behold. The whole experience left me with a mushy feeling inside and I shall definitely be reading this book again.

The book was sent to me by Izzles (or Tess as she is on Bookgroup Online) as part of her bookring. I'm only 30 pages in so far, but am thoroughly enjoying this complete diversion from my normal reading habits.

The writing style takes a bit of getting used to, but it's definitely worth sticking with. It took me a while to cotton onto the fact that the book is set in modern times. The story itself isn't particularly remarkable, but the characters are and the way the story is told made a real impression on me. It's always nice to find something different from my normal range of reading. Thoroughly recommended.

I got this passed on to me a few days ago by MyFriendJack and have only read the blurb on the back so far... I'm starting on it tonight though, so I'll keep you posted! :)

Well I can say I tried. I know I've had the book far too long, but I started to read it at least 4 times and just can't get into it. Not neccessarily because I don't like it, but I just don't have much free time at the moment! Very disappointed with myself there... Anyway, now it's really time to give up and pass it on I think.
