From Amazon.com:

Will Her Determination to Know the Truth be Worth Its Sacrifices?
With her first trial a dramatic success, Kit Shannon steps out from the protective and guiding hand of her mentor and begins her own law practice. When she is drawn to the defense of a man accused of a crime that crosses racial lines, Kit is unprepared for the prejudice and hatred that is hurled in her direction. A loyal supporter of the law, Kit struggles with the secret role of the very officers who claim to represent justice.

When a new suitor enters her life, Kit finds her heart longing to embrace the love he offers. His gentle care for her provides the support she needs as she faces opposition that continually grows more threatening. Could this be God's leading hand?

Sending to Antof9 for the m-bag to New Zealand!!

Journal Entry 3 by Antof9 from Lakewood, Colorado USA on Monday, October 3, 2005
Caught for the m-bag going to our friends in New Zealand.

Another book where the spine isn't even bent! Do you think the NZ BookCrossers will mind if I read it first and maybe put a tiny crease in it? :)

Thanks so much, smhamn! This box has a great variety for our kiwi friends.

OK -- it still looks brand new :) I think I kept it in pretty good shape, although a drop of tea might have gotten on a page or two in the back half!

I was a little disappointed to find that this was the 2nd book in a series (I'm a series fanatic, and must read them in order!), but it didn't seem to matter than I hadn't read the first one. Which I suppose is the sign of a good book -- that it can stand on its own, no?

This was very interesting and a quick read -- fascinating historically, it takes place in Los Angeles of 1904. With a female lawyer (in the story, she's "one of the first to pass the bar, and the first to appear in court") fighting societal prejudices about herself and her client, it's upsetting and uplifting.

She definitely fights for the underdog -- a Chinese girl accused of prostitution, and a Mexican guy accused of rape and murder -- because she knows it's right.

This is the first I've read of these authors, but I'd read another one or two if I ran across them :)

Thanks for sending this for the m-bag, smhamn! I enjoyed it :)
