I thought Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis" was a very special book.
So I am looking forward to reading her new book "Embroideries". The subject of "Embroideries" is the sex life of Iranian women. I wonder what and how she will write about this.

I wasn't disappointed. This is a funny little book about the loves, marriages and sex life of a group of Iranian women who meet for an afternoon of tea drinking. It's just a pity the book is very thin: I finished it in about two hours.
The title "Embroideries" refers to the practice of surgically restoring virginity.

Visje sent me this book from the Netherlands at my request. I sent her LaBrava by Elmore Leonard in trade, and feel a little badly, as LaBrava was an older paperback and this is a pristine hardback in good shape with its dust jacket.
My experience with the book was that last night I grabbed it and read the last story in it first. I find Marja Satrapi a page turner. This is a short book and the stories in it are good... it is basically set in an afternoon tea party where women are sharing stories of sex and love with each other. The problem that Satrapi has is handling so many characters and short-short stories in a short graphic novel form. She does this well, but I still had trouble telling people apart. The book would actually have benefited from a bit more expostion, but Marja's great art does make up for some of the lack of information. Regardless of this minor criticism, I enjoyed the stories quite a bit. I felt like a fly on the wall, hearing a bunch of women's stories. The real problem with the book is that it leaves you wanting more, especially for those of us who recently read Persepholis 1 & 2. I hope that Marja writes and draws many more such stories.

Loaned to a friend, thinking I would get it back and trade or release it. Since I am still waiting, I want to put the status on Traveling. If I get it back I will find it a good home. If not, then hopefully someone else will find it in the future and journal it.
