DON’T MESS WITH HEXES

Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there. Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie is afraid she’s a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn’t help.

Then, seemingly out of the blue, Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company that tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie’s ordinariness is an asset. Lacking any bit of magic, she can easily spot a fake spell, catch hidden clauses in competitor’s contracts, and detect magically disguised intruders. Suddenly, average Katie is very special indeed.

She quickly learns that office politics are even more complicated when your new boss is a real ogre, and you have a crush on the sexy, shy, ultra powerful head of the R&D department, who is so busy fighting an evil competitor threatening to sell black magic on the street that he seems barely to notice Katie. Now it’s up to Katie to pull off the impossible: save the world and–hopefully–live happily ever after.

A truly fun read! A quirky view of the world paired with a classic story - girl meets boy, girl kisses frog, girl isn't sure she met a prince. Loved it!

I knew I wasn't going to want to put this one down as I was turning to the second page! Who knew being ultra-ordinary could turn out to be so interesting?

I share Katie's crush on Owen - the second he started blushing I was a goner. Why is he so bashful? What's up with his background? More Owen, please!

Anyway, the book has a few small flaws (the Mr. Mervyn character didn't work seemlessly, and a little more detail about the background of the magical world would have been nice), but they really don't detract from the story or from the fun of reading it.

Chick lit meets an inverted version of Harry Potter, and it really works. I can't wait to read the next book!

Wow...talk about a short-term memory - I completely forgot this was coming. Yay for wonderful "surprises" :) I've got one bookring ahead of this (Michael Palin's Himalaya), but should be able to read it very soon. Thanks!

I loved this book, and once I finally had a chance to start, I could hardly put it down. Chick lit is usually too fluffy for me, or the main characters are too vapid, but the author hit just the right tone to get me hooked. While I find the frequent mentions of Katie's "down home" sensibilities a little irksome, it wasn't enough to get in the way of a great story.
Totally loving the lawyer guy, and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequels!
Off to mellonhead in today's mail.

Journal Entry 13 by mellonhead from Austin, Texas USA on Tuesday, March 6, 2007
Eeek! I got this a week or two ago and forgot to journal it. I've just finished another bookring book, so I'm starting on this one right away! Thanks midwinter, and thank you for the reminder email.
This was a fun read. I'm Pming next in line for her address today (3/21).

Rec'd the book today from Mellonhead. Just in time to take it with me on my trip this coming week. Hoping to pm and get an address from next in line. Will be camping with my s-i-l's family who happen to be from WI...maybe we might be able to hand deliver it to next in line?! Stranger things have happened...we'll see! No too far away. Oh well! LOL

Ok, now it's official - I have completely lost my mind! I thought I had already sent this book on to Three104, until my daughter brought it to me today saying thanks for letting her borrow it! Her term of borrow is loosely "I took it without telling you about it", so I apologize for the delay. It will be on its way tomorrow morning. Thanks for sharing the book. I look forward to the sequels, as this was no doubt one of the best fantasy-type books I've read in a long time. I gave it top scores, which I rarely ever do!

What a nice refreshing different read from all the vampire books I have been reading lately. I think it is time I changed things up a bit because of how much I really enjoyed this book.

I have a bunch of books to get into the mail to Cherie so I will just check to be sure that she still wants this one and send her a wee package.

Journal Entry 20 by CheriePie from Campbell, California USA on Wednesday, August 1, 2007
Received this today in a package of books from Joanne. Unfortunately, I've got like (I kid you not!) about 20 rings and rays here, though not all need to be read ahead of this, and yes I still owe some swap books from back as far as April as well. I'm currently running about 3 months with rings so I hope that's okay. If it's not, let me know and I'll send it along to boogal unread. I already have the 3rd book in this series though and had long ago taken books 1 and 2 off my PBS wishlist cuz of these rings so I really hope I can hang on to it for a bit without throwing the list order out of whack or anything... LMK if it's a problem. Thanks! :)

UPDATE 9/3/07: I'm reading this now. Started today and already I'm on chapter 5. I'm not sure that I'll finish it AND get it mailed out to the next participant before I leave for California on Saturday the 8th, but I thought I'd best put this update in here since Teri has been quite adamant about my being able to read and pass this on within 30 days. Sorry for the delay.

Finished this up the night I arrived in San Jose/Mtn View. Will write up my review shortly and get it off to KathyB once I get back home sometime after the 9/21.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this going in... would it be just another silly chick-lit paranormal wannabe? Fortunately, that wasn't the case here. Shanna Swendson has some talent, and this book didn't come off like a standard chick-lit trying to jump on the paranormal bandwagon either.

Katie Chandler is just your ordinary girl living in New York City... so ordinary in fact, she's actually pretty special. As an Immune, magic has absolutely NO effect on her; all the glamour and illusion used throughout the world to mask the use of magic doesn't work on her at all. She can see right through it, which makes her a hot commodity to MSI, Inc., that's Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc.

After being recruited by Rod and that hot guy, Owen, from R&D, Katie goes to work for MSI as a Verifier, and learns that all the things she used to try to write off in her head as "that's NYC for ya" really are there!

And to top it all off, she's just learned that an evil wizard who once worked for MSI is attempting to introduce a number of manipulative spells to the market, which will cause all kinds of chaos and mayhem. And if that happens... oy, our entire world as we know it could come to a screeching halt! Fortunately, it's Katie to the rescue!

This will be in the mail to Kathy shortly.

UPDATE 28-SEP-2007: Mailed to KathyB25 on 9/28/07 via Media Mail.

Harry Potter made all of us want to be able to do magic, but now Katie Chandler has arrived and shown us all how special it is to be ordinary. The world Swendson has created is fun and interesting as are the characters. I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series.
Thanks ladiibbug for including me in this ray.
Luckily boogal was sitting by the computer this morning and sent an address back immediately. This will be going out in today's mail.

What a fun read! Thanks for sharing it and I can't wait to read the other books in the series. I agree with Kyri that I would like to know more about Owen and he is crush-worthy. One of my favorite parts of the book is when they were putting poor Ethan through his test. That was fun.

This was sent back to Cherie today for Amber's m-bag.

This is one of those books that while you are reading it you want kick yourself for not reading it sooner. I absolutely loved this from page one and couldn't stop reading! Chicklit meets magic meets Harry Potter. Lovely, witty and fun this was a special and enchanting read!

If I didn't already know that the 2nd book was coming to me (via a bookring) I would be ordering the 2nd part now from Amazon. I can't wait to see what happens to Katie next and to see what magical problems she will be sorting out. I am also pretty interested in seeing if she will get together with Owen.

Thank you Ladiibbug for starting this rung and Cherie for sending this on in the MBag! I will pass this on to Rianonne when I see her next!

"Enchanted, Inc." is a wonderful read if you like quick paced, fun novel and enjoy its fluffiness. Unfortunately I'm looking for something a bit more challenging and engaging and so it wasn't my book.

Swendson warns us often that the characters are stuck in a serious situation - a magical war between good and evil... This sounds exciting and cool but Swendson never delivers. The magical war seems more like an after thought, taking a back seat to the main character's endless babbling over her crush, Owen. Instead of having me worry about what the villain will do next, I'm made to focus on Katie's life as a single girl in the big city and working in a magical company. To top it all off the dramatic final battle left me extremely bored and frustrated :(
The reader is told on more than one occassion that Owen is an extremely powerful wizard. And yet the "coolest" thing I saw him do in the book is throw someone with the flick of his hand. Maybe I've been spoiled by other books, but to me, this isn't very impressive. I believe that Swendson missed a chance to surprise her readers with how frightening and "destructive" his skills really are. So I was disappointed with Owen's wasted potential.
Well, I have to confess that I liked the funny ideas thrown in - especially the frogs :)

Thanks so much for including me in this Ring ladiibbug! It will travel on as soon as possible.

Blimey, this one has been around!
Arrived this morning and looks like great fun!

( Guess I had already sent you that pm Riannone!! )

An enjoyable read, although not as great as I had expected. Liked the idea of only the least magical beings actually seeing the magic!

Pming candydarling now.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Enchanted, Inc. It was cute and entertaining, and left me wanting more. I'm curious to learn more about Owen and the magical world. I was a bit disappointed by the crisis which had prompted the return of Merlin - I would have thought it would be something really earthshattering, yet to me it felt pretty mundane. Still, this was a minor quibble in an otherwise enjoyable novel. I'm looking forward to reading Once Upon Stilettos.

Will mail the book to Wyvernfriend tomorrow.

A fun read. Katie Chandler has moved from small-town Texas to New York and is trying to ignore some of the weird she sees. Assuming that it's just New York she's surprised to find that some of the weird is in fact magical beings and that as a null she's actually a useful person to Magic, Spells and Illusions, Inc.

This story shows her rise in the company (a little too meteoric really)and her coming to terms with her new life. Like many others I really liked Owen! And yes more Owen would make a good read.
