Journal Entry 1 by Heaven-Ali from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Saturday, June 25, 2005
From an isolated mountain cabin, Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist is caught off guard by a young hunter. On a farm futher down the mountain, Lusa finds herself marooned in a strange place where she must declare or lose her attachment to the land that has become her own. A few more miles down the road a pair of elderly feuding neighbours tend their respective farms and wrangle about God.
Over the course of one humid summer, these characters find not only their connections to each other but a sense of the place they share.

This is a wondeful book, I absolutley loved it the characters became people I wanted to meet.

This was a bit slow to start off with, but I quickly became drawn into the characters and their lives. I really enjoyed it, and was quite sad to see it end.

Journal Entry 10 by lesezeichen from Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Sunday, August 28, 2005
A very enjoyble read indeed and lots of memorable characters. I agree with you, Heaven-Ali, that Kingsolver creates people that you would like to meet in real life (esp. true also for the Bean Trees). And then, just like in the novels of Sharyn McCrumb the Appalachian mountain seem to be the perfect setting for this kind of book. I have to see them for myself one day ;-) Thanks for this ring!

Edit 29.08.: Sent to olifant today!

Journal Entry 11 by Olifant from Porthmadog, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 6, 2005
And in Utrecht, The Netherlands it is. Thanks for sending and ringing.

My first Kingsolver and I enjoyed it very much: The Bean Trees

Journal Entry 12 by Olifant from Porthmadog, Wales United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 14, 2005
I so much wanted to like this book, but stopped halfway. I couldn’t get into the story. I am a bit surprised by this, for Barbara Kingsolver’s writing style is beautiful and her themes and settings appeal to me. I suppose it’s just the wrong moment and will definitely give this book another chance some day.

Off it goes to teachie today.

Journal Entry 13 by teachie from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire United Kingdom on Thursday, September 29, 2005
Thank you so much Heaven-Ali for letting me read this book. I loved every page and didn't want the story to end. I have read The Poisonwood Bible and enjoyed that, I shall certainly be looking out for her other books.
I shall post this off to Rory G as soon as I get his address.

This one arrived today. I have another ring before ithis but I try to get to this soon.

Journal Entry 16 by RoryG from Bluemont, Virginia USA on Thursday, November 24, 2005
I'm sorry it has taken quite a long time for me to read this, but I've been under some stress lately and this has really slowed down my reading. I had read the Poisonwood Bible before and that was the reason why I joined this ring. And this wasn't a disappointment. I like the way the characters really are alive and complex beings. And I like the way the writer sees the nature and humans as a part of an entity. I also like the writing style, even though it's quite slow to read. This book made the desire to read more Kingsolver's books even stronger.

I'll send this forward as soon as I get the next person's address.
Edit 2.12.2005: The book was sent 29.11.2005

Journal Entry 17 by CarynPic from Methuen, Massachusetts USA on Thursday, December 29, 2005

Journal Entry 18 by CarynPic from Methuen, Massachusetts USA on Sunday, January 22, 2006
Finished the book on 01.19.06. What a great read. Didn't enjoy quite as much as The Poisonwod Bible, but loved how all the stories intertwined toward the end. PM'ed Luintaurien for address.

I really enjoyed this book! I found it to be a little slow at the beginning, but once I got into the rhythm of the author's style I appreciated how details from each character's life fit in with the others. I loved how everything came together in the end.

I've sent a PM to the next person on the list and will pop it in the mail as soon as I have an address.

Thanks for sharing this book with me! :)

I could not get interested in this book. I got through 85 pages and decided to stop reading. I am kind of disappointed because I have enjoyed the other two Barbara Kingsolver books I've read. Thanks for sharing anyway, Heaven-Ali.

I really enjoyed this book. I agree with the comment that the characters become people that you want to meet, especially Lusa who i found myself admiring from the first time she appeared. I found this book gripping from the beginning and felt sad to see it end as i never wanted to put it down.

On to the table of books

Journal Entry 33 by Jenatleisure from Chobham, Surrey United Kingdom on Monday, July 2, 2007
I was happily reading my copy of this book a few months ago when it was accidentally soaked, think it fell in the pool, and had to be put down, always a sad moment throwing out a book.

I was glad to find this copy at the Unconvention to replace mine.

Now I just have to remember where I was.
