"A seductive and evocative epic on an intimate scale, that tells the extraordinary story of a geisha girl. Summoning up more than twenty years of Japan's most dramatic history, it uncovers a hidden world of eroticism and enchantment, exploitation and degradation. From a small fishing village in 1929, the tale moves to the glamorous and decadent heart of Kyoto in the 1930s, where a young peasant girl is sold as servant and apprentice to a renowned geisha house. She tells her story many years later from the Waldorf Astoria in New York; it exquisitely evokes another culture, a different time and the details of an extraordinary way of life. It conjures up the perfection and the ugliness of life behind rice-paper screens, where young girls learn the arts of geisha - dancing and singing, how to wind the kimono, how to walk and pour tea, and how to beguile the most powerful men."

I had been meaning to read this book for ages as people kept telling me about it. Definitely worth reading.

Sending it out as a ring if anyone is interested. It's a little bashed up, but will still cope with a few more reads.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The further into the story I got the more I wanted to read. For my first book ring it was a great success. I will be sending it on to Angellica as soon as I hear from her.

I really enjoyed reading this - sorry it took so long though - it was well worth it.

I was surprised how little I knew about Japanese culture. I will be investigating more.

A little disappointed by the ending.

I have PMarkaris' address and it will be in the post tomorrow

I enjoyed re-reading this, but I don't think it's as historically accurate as it pretends to be. Still, leaving that aside, it's a good read - a real page-turner!

On its way to Rossella05... Enjoy...

A captivating read on a fascinating subject. The second half of the book was not as satisfying though. Thanks for sharing. Mailed to the TheWhiteLion at the end of last week.

I have mixed feelings about the book. On the one hand, it was really interesting to read about Japanese culture, and the story of Sayuri was fascinating. I became bored with the second half of the book though , and had to force myself to keep reading to finish the book. I was also disappointed by the ending - I thought the author could have done better.

Am still glad I've read the book though!

Oh, I neglected to journal this to say it had arrived, many apologies.

I've finished it now, and I really enjoyed it. I thought this was going to be really hard work, but it was very easy to read despite the off putting teeny weeny text :) Sayuri's story was fascinating. I was a bit perplexed by her obsession with the Chairman which seemed to originate from nothing more than him buying an ice cream when she was little. A relatively happy ending was also a nice change from most of the books I've been reading lately! Off to watch the film now, thanks Pookledo for sharing! X
