Pickwick

Fforde has done it again ! As in the Eyre Affair, the book is packed with literary references and wild, hilarious ideas : Thursday Next becomes an apprentice to Miss Havisham (from "Great Expectations" and incidentally a mad driver) in order to become a Jurisfiction Prose Resource Operative (agents whose job is to maintain the integrity of popular fiction), she is prosecuted in Kafka's "The Trial", someone tries to kill her through coincidences, there are grammasites that live inside books and feed on grammar, a Character Exchange Programme so that characters can vacation in a book other than the one they belong to, the Cheshire Cat is the librarian for The Great Library...

This book is absolutely brilliant, I can't wait to read "The Well of Lost Plots" !

Synopsis :
Thursday Next, literary detective and newlywed is back to embark on an adventure that begins, quite literally on her own doorstep. It seems that Landen, her husband of four weeks, actually drowned in an accident when he was two years old. Someone, somewhere, sometime, is responsible. The sinister Goliath Corporation wants its operative Jack Schitt out of the poem in which Thursday trapped him, and it will do almost anything to achieve this - but bribing the ChronoGuard? Is that possible? Having barely caught her breath after The Eyre Affair, Thursday must battle corrupt politicians, try to save the world from extinction, and help the Neanderthals to species self-determination. Mastadon migrations, journeys into Just William, a chance meeting with the Flopsy Bunnies, and violent life-and-death struggles in the summer sales are all part of a greater plan. But whose? and why?

ooooh! This book arrived today. The person who came up with the idea for the reverse wishlist relay was a genius!
I am so excited (chich, I love the Dodo!). Of course now I'll have to get The Eyre Affair, but now that I have this one I'm sure I won't be able to resist the call of the book store for very long.

Because so often the second book in a series doesn't measure up the to the first, I was a little worried about starting this one. I am happy to report though that I was not disappointed. I loved this book as much as The Eyre Affair.
Jasper Fforde has an amazing imagination--I am in awe--and I love all the literary references in these books (after reading The Eyre Affair I decided that I really needed to reread Jane Eyre since its been many years since I first read it).
Beyond all the new developments in this book (more "extinct" species, different villians, the Jurisfiction, the footnoterphone, and all the other new things we learn about Thursday's world), I really like the fact that Pickwick's character is more developed in this book. Yes, I'll admit it... I love the dodos!

I have to thank my lovely book fairy, chich, for sending this to me as well as Something Rotten. A wonderful wish-granter she is. Thanks so much, chich!

I've enjoyed these books so much that I've decided to get hard cover copies for my personal collection.
I want to do something special with the paperback copies though so I've decided to RABCK the whole set to one person.
I am very happy to reseve this book for Ishepoh. I hope he enjoys Thursday and her adventures as much as I have.
