A Dark-adapted Eye

One of my least favourite parts of reading a new book is the first chapter or so. Getting to know characters and feeling your way into new plotlines and scenarios is a neccesary evil which can often be a bit of a chore for me. This book was one of the worst examples of a book I just couldn't get a grip on. The few pages I did read flitted from one thing to another without giving any clue as to where things were going and what was important to the plot. I couldn't help thinking the author was giving as little away as possible in order to be clever rather than developing suspense.
This may well be a good book, I guess I'll never know as it's a rare example of a book that I just couldn't be bothered finishing, or barely starting for that matter.
