Amazon.com says:
Christopher is an intelligent youth who lives in the functional hinterland of autism--every day is an investigation for him because of all the aspects of human life that he does not quite get. When the dog next door is killed with a garden fork, Christopher becomes quietly persistent in his desire to find out what has happened and tugs away at the world around him until a lot of secrets unravel messily.

This book was exceptional! I really enjoyed it!

Received this in the mail today. I'll start reading it right away.

Journal Entry 5 by PJW from Redmond, Washington USA on Wednesday, July 20, 2005
I read this book in a day. Then I went back and reread the major events from the first half of the book so I could see how they looked in light of the major revelations from the second half of the book. I like the unique perspective you get from Christopher's point of view. But on the second reading when I already knew the story I noticed the words themselves more, and the style struck me as a little ugly and unpleasant to read. The style is right for the narrator, though. So I don't recommend reading it twice through in two days. I do recommend reading it once, though.

Journal Entry 6 by dospescados on Monday, July 25, 2005
Thanks to seacloud49 for hosting the ring and to PJW for sending it. It has a few books in front of it but those shouldn't take too long.

Journal Entry 7 by dospescados on Wednesday, August 24, 2005
I read the first few chapters tonight and should have the rest done in the next day or two. Looks like it'll be a much better read than some of the books I had in front of it which took far longer than I cared for and enjoyed much too little. I'm PMing Apolonia for her address so I can have it in the mail to her once I finish reading.

Journal Entry 8 by dospescados on Saturday, August 27, 2005
I finished reading this afternoon. I thought most of the events rather predictiable but that, of course, is not really the point of the book. The author did an incredible job using Christopher's perspective and explaining how he thinks and reasons. The book was very original and did a great job with the issues raised and many of the characters involved, especially given the perspective.

I'm going to hold the book for one more week cos my boyfriend expressed interest in reading it (I swear, he only notices the books on the shelves when I actually read them, not when they're sitting there for a month!) to give him the chance and then it will be on it's way to Apolonia.

Journal Entry 9 by Apolonia from Lynn, Massachusetts USA on Saturday, October 8, 2005
I received this a few days ago, thanks for sending it Dospescados, and thanks for organizing the ring Seacloud49. I have a few ahead of it but will get to it asap.

I was really impressed with how the author got you into the mind of someone with Asperger's syndrome. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to live that way. I have a much better understanding of Asperger's syndrome now.
I have to admit the book was a lot better than I thought it would be. I didn't expect there to be much of a story line, more of a focus on Asperger's but the author managed to pull off both. I will be reccomending this book to others.
I will have it in the mail to Satnam within the next 3 days. Hope everyone else on the list enjoys it! Thanks again for sharing Seacloud49!

Journal Entry 11 by Satnam from Milford, New Hampshire USA on Thursday, November 10, 2005
This just came in the mail yesterday. A friend of mine told me to be careful how many bookrings/rays I signed up for, because she said they tend to come all at once. Well, what do you know, my very first bookring book showed up on Tuesday and the next day, this one came!! I'm almost halfway through the first one though, and this will be next. I'm very curious about it (ha ha). I think it'll be very different from the books I've been reading lately.

Journal Entry 12 by Satnam from Milford, New Hampshire USA on Wednesday, November 16, 2005
I really enjoyed this book. It was great to get a glimpse of that perspective. I loved the substitute they came up with for hugging. I can't imagine not being able to hug my child. When my son was 4, he had to have his tonsils removed. We taught him how to sign "i love you" so even if he couldn't talk we could still say "i love you". He's 9 now, and we still use it sometimes when we say good-bye or are in a place or situation where you're supposed to be quiet.

Something a little weird happened to me. I read this book right after I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Now these are both very unique, very different books, but I was amazed at how many things were mentioned in both books. Prime numbers, exponents, stars, spaceships, monkeys... I can't remember them all now. But reading them back to back and having so many things mentioned in both books in different contexts was a little freaky.

Thank you seacloud for sharing this book! I've already reccommended it to a few people.

I just mailed it out today to librarymousie. Enjoy!

This was a really good read (and quick, too--done in two evenings!). I have to admit, after hearing so many wonderful things about this title, I was a bit dubious--would it live up to all reports. Overall, the answer is a resounding "yes." I found myself reading passages aloud to my long-suffering husband, because I just needed to share some of Christopher's descriptions with someone.

Thanks, seacloud49, for including me in this ring. I'm off to PM sistert and keep this baby moving!

I know I'm going to be the one person who didn't fall in love with this book:

Though an interesting story, I found it predictable and just OK. I did enjoy the unique perspective, the triumph over extreme issues, etc... I can't say I found the ending all that interesting though. I felt like something was missing after such a interesting journey.

Off to contact arugh48187.

Journal Entry 19 by arugh48187 from Highland Park, Illinois USA on Friday, March 10, 2006
Found this one in my mailbox yesterday. I can't tell you how happy I am to have it in my hot little hands. I think I have signed up for three or four bookrings all of which stalled before me leaving me in despair of ever getting to read it. Now it is here. Yay!!! It shouldn't take too long as I only have one other bookring in front of it. You can keep track of its progress via my bookshelf.

Journal Entry 20 by arugh48187 from Highland Park, Illinois USA on Tuesday, March 28, 2006
This book was not at all what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it anyway. Christopher's character was very well done and very believable. I particularly liked the parts about Toby as I used to have pet rats and they are very fun. I too got the same reaction from people when I told them about my pets. It was very amusing. My mom still shivers whenever I mention them. :>

Thanks for sharing. I will send this one on its way shortly.

Wonderful book. Thank you so much for sharing it! I am going to do some research on the author to see how he created Christopher, with all of his particular coping mechanisms. Certainly provided a new prism for viewing the universe!
Will send on to ResQgeek as soon as I get mailing info.

Journal Entry 23 by ResQgeek from Alexandria, Virginia USA on Wednesday, July 26, 2006
Arrived in the mail yesterday. I'll begin reading it straight away.

Journal Entry 24 by ResQgeek from Alexandria, Virginia USA on Tuesday, August 1, 2006
This was a fascinating book, not so much because of the story, but because of the point-of-view. Told in first person, from the point-of-view of an autistic teenager, this book provides a glimpse into how an autistic person perceives the world. Because of the different ways they perceive and process information, activities that most of us take for granted provide severe challeges to someone wtih autism.

The death of the neighbor's dog, in the opening chapter of this book provides the impetus for an exploration by our autistic narrator. What he learns along the way forces him to push against the boundaries of his comfort zone, and he discovers a remarkable ability to acheive far more than he ever believed he could. A remarkable coming-of-age story with a unique perspective.

I already have the next person's address and I'll be mailing this later this week.

What a great book. It had so much more going on than I had expected. I especially liked the asides where Christopher would explain how he views everyday things and events. And things like describing The Monty Hall Problem. I had heard of this, but never knew what it actually was. At first I was thinking, 'of course it's a 50/50 chance', but then Christopher (Haddon) does a good job of explaining the logic of it not being 50/50.

A very creative idea for a novel, and I'm glad I've read it.

One thing that gets me though. On page 98 Christopher writes, Other people have pictures in their heads, too. But they are different because the pictures in my head are all pictures of things which really happened. But other people have pictures in their heads of things which aren't real and didn't happen. He then gives examples of his mother describing an alternate life living in a farmhouse in the South of France if she hadn't married Christopher's father, and of Siobhan imagining that she's staying in a house on Cape Cod with a friend. However, turn one page to page 100, new chapter, and Christopher writes about how he likes imagining that he his alone underwater in a metal submersible and can move the submersible around and never be found. Doesn't this contradict? Is it a case of Christopher getting confused and only thinking that he can't have pictures of something that didn't happen, or is it Haddon getting confused and unknowingly contradicting himself?

Will mail to seacloud49 in the next couple of days.
