The Hundred Secret Senses
10 journalers for this copy...
Garage sales are wonderful, aren't they?? 9 books for under $10. It really doesn't get any better than that.
From Amazon:
Olivia, the narrator of this story, was born to an American mother and a Chinese father. She meets her 18-year-old Chinese half sister, Kwan, for the first time shortly after their father's death. Kwan adores "Libby-ah" and tries to introduce her to her Chinese heritage through stories and memories. Olivia is embarrassed by her sibling, but finds as she matures that she has inadvertently absorbed much about Chinese superstitions, spirits, and reincarnation.

This has been a bookring of bad luck:
The first copy I had disappeared in the mail, the second one has stalled.
I have now bought a brand new copy and registered it on the same BCID as the stalled copy.
If this doesn't work out then I give up!
Czersk, don't worry, if something happens to this copy as well then I will buy one more copy and send it directly to you!

I hope the bad luck has stopped, the book arrived safely today to Portugal, in a beautiful package that I will keep! :)
Sobergirl, I will take very very good care of it, don't worry...I'm not quite sure if I can read it quickly, as I have been busy, but I'll try. :)
Thanks a lot! =)

Arrived in post today - thanks Kapalika. Shall start as soon as I finished my current read to prevent any futher stalls in ring!
Oi! This is a bit confusing. I have a copy of this book with this BCID here in Minnesota, while there is another copy of this same book with an identical BCID in Ireland. I wonder how this will work out . . .
Anyway, thanks for sending the book home! I'm afraid it may be a while before I can read it, but I will get to it- someday. The best of luck to the other book on its travels!

OK-From this point on, the copy I have in Minnesota will have a new BCID.

Started reading this and just couldn't get in to it. I read alot of Amy Tan a few years back but I guess I'm not a fany anymore. Currently on its way to MyopicMeringue
Thanks, eefa. I look forward to reading it.
I have sent this book on to Drutt - my apologies for having had it longer than a month.
I enjoyed this book, and I loved the exuberant character of Kwan - I think especially because she really reminded me of a Korean woman I knew once, and because I've had a lot of Chinese friends, and could recognise some of the cultural things in the way that Kwan expresses herself. I liked how the quiet, cynical character of the narrator, Olivia, contrasts so dramatically with Kwan. I found the comparisons of American culture and Chinese culture, and how Olivia is caught unwillingly between the two, really interesting.
I liked the first half of the book better than the second. Although I really liked the idea of the characters going on a trip to China, I was disappointed with how it turned out, because it seemed to get rather ridiculous and melodramatic. But the book is written in such a way as to suggest that my having this response is indicative of me not understanding Chinese culture. I don't know. I am interested to see what others think of the book, and I'm glad to have had the chance to read it. It's the first Amy Tan book that I've read, and I now definitely want to read more of her books.
Thanks, Sobergirl, for starting this bookring.

Very gratefully received from Myopic Meringue, along with chocolate! Yum. Will read soon and send on. The book, that is, not the chocolate. The chocolate will be long gone before it comes time to send the book.
Following a nudge from Sobergirl, this book will go on its way to LindyLouMac on Monday (Kinedi asked to be skipped as she has already received a copy).
Edited to add - on its way.

Arrived safely today from Drutt, thankyou. With thanks also to sobergirl for letting me join her ring. I will read, review and send this book on its way home again after a year of travelling!
Another brilliant novel from Amy Tan. I loved the characters of Olivia and Kwan and was eager to learn more about them as I read. I have to mention though that although I like the concept of Yin- the afterlife/reincarnation I found the interludes through the story with General Cope and Miss Banner difficult, even though I appreciated they were an important part of the whole in regard to the difference in American and Chinese cultures. I recommend this highly.
Synopsis:Amazon.co.uk
Olivia Yee is only five years old when Kwan, her older sister from China, comes to live with the family and turns her life upside down, bombarding her day and night with ghostly stories of strange ancestors from the world of Yin. Olivia just wants to lead a normal American life. For the next thirty years, Olivia endures visits from Kwan and her ghosts, who appear in the living world to offer advice on everything from restaurants to Olivia's failed marriage. But just when she cannot bear it any more, the revelations of a tragic family secret finally open her mind to the startling truths hidden in Kwan's unorthodox vision of the world.
14.06.06. I now have an address for Sobergirl so on my next trip to the post office(19.06.06.)this book will be on its way home.

I got this book as a swap from sobergirl today. We met up at the cathedral. It's been a hot, very hot summer to date, and would you believe it the heavens opened about 45 mins before our meet up time but we turned up anyway, and now I have this book in my sweaty palms.
The back cover reads "Olivia Yee is only five years old when Kwan, her older sister from China, comes to live with the family and turns her life upside down ... Olivia just wants to lead a normal American life.
I'll let you know what I think of the book as soon as I've read it :)

i received this book from sobergirl as an exhange and finished reading it last night. It wasn't really my kind of book to be honest, as there wasn't a very clear plot- though it did (surprisingly) come together in the end.
It's a story which is heavily into Chinese (eastern) thinking - and I did find that fascinating, though the thoughts of Kwan the main character were definitely not easy to follow. There was a lot of humour in the book - and tragedy, so I'm suprised I didn't like it more than I did.
For now the book is sitting on my bookshelf, but I think I know someone who would really enjoy this.

Wow! This book has really been around!
Enjoyed this immensely. I've been thinking about Kwan ever since; hope she'll 'return'. Funny, as I'm the practical one (not brash like Olivia, I hope, though).
This book didn't get nearly the attention of some other of Amy Tan's books. Here is an interview with her about it at Salon:
