Maybe it's me, but I know why this is considered a classic. One man's life story through ups and downs. If you love books about China, and even if you don't, you shouldn't miss this one.
Just arrived in the mail as part of a trade with Girlfriend in a Coma by Douglas Coupland. This is perfect, because I've actually been craving a book about that period of China and just finished the book I've been reading today, so this is perfect timing! Thanks!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's very readable, the writing style quite sucessfully mimicking that of a chinese fairy tale. It's still not my favourite book on that period of China's history (Wild Swans by Jung Chang still holding strong to that particulary title), but it's still a book I would recomend to anyone who is interested in fictionalized acounts of Pre-revolutionary China.
