From the back cover:
"Two sisters. Bright, attractive Sarah, newly down from Oxford and now bed-siteering in Highbury; and beautiful Louise, who has just made a brilliant marriage to the rich but unlikeable novelist Stephen Halifax. But (despite their strangely protracted continental hoenymoon) things seem to be going badly wrong... if the enigmatic letters, the hints dropped at parties and the bitchy newspaper gossip are anything to go by. As the situation reaches its bizarre climax, Lousie and Sarah too have to discover whether they can really forgive each other for existing."

I first read and very much enjoyed The Millstone when I was a teenager (I think I had read a passage in one of my english language textbooks and my english teacher urged me to read the whole thing -in fact I think it was the first english book I read...), and after that I read this one and The Garrick Year. The Millstone was the one I liked the most of the three, so in the process of clearing my shelves (and as I spotted it in caffcaff's wishlist*), I've decided to share it with the my fellow bookcrossers.

I wish I could remember what the "bizarre climax" was... :o)

* Huh??? In whose wishlist??? Sorry redhouse, I don't know why I was thinking of caffcaff when I wrote the journal entry... Now *that* was embarrassing!!! :oS

Arrived this morning, many thanks.
I too read and enjoyed The Millstone when I was in my early twenties. Have also read The Garrick Years which I enjoyed less, but this one looks promising.

Update August 2006.

Not as good as The Millstone, but still a very good read. I am saving this for releasing in September.

I'd heard of bookcrossing and always hoped to find one but never really expected to. Certainly not at work. But that is just what happened. I work as a code (date) checker in Morrison's Supermarket which involves checking everything on the shelves. You'd be amazed what we find! What a pleasant surprise this was.

I usually read 'serious' books - history, science, exploration, military, - that sort of thing. This was something quite different which I might never have chosen. Having read it, I must say that I enjoyed it very much.

Our younger daughter enjoys reading so I passed the book on to her and as she gets around more than I do, it is likely to be left in an interesting place.
Now I must be really bold and start releasing a few of my jealously guarded volumes. Let's see. 'Better Sight Without Glasses', 'Pocket World in Figures', 'Russian Phrase Book'. I'm just too generous. Any requests?
