Small Gods was my very first Discworld novel, and it
remains my favorite. I love the idea behind this book
- that gods only grow and become powerful if people
believe in them; I mean *really* believe in them. Sort
of like when we all clapped our hands for Tinkerbell
when we were kids.

Anyway, even though the book is satiric and
hysterically funny, it does explore some pretty
serious themes. But Pratchett wraps them in such funny
lines, those themes go down easily. Here are a few
sample quotes from the book:

'His philosophy was a mixture of three famous schools
-- the Cynics, the Stoics and the Epicureans -- and
summed up all three of them in his famous phrase, "You
can't trust any bugger further than you can throw him,
and there's nothing you can do about it, so let's have
a drink." '

"Not a man to mince words. People, yes. But not
words."

"When you can flatten entire cities at a whim, a
tendency towards quiet reflection and
seeing-things-from-the-other-fellow's-point- of-view
is seldom necessary."
