It's hard to find a story that grabs its readers and squeezes like Val McDermid's The Mermaids Singing. Psycholgical profiler Dr.Tony Hill is forced to work with a Yorkshire Police Detective (Carol Jordan) on a series of murders. They seem to be committed by the same killer, who enjoys torturing his victims with a passion for ancient and archaic torture systems. Dr. Hill's approach to solving the crimes is unsettling for Detective Jordan, who is used to the routines and parameters of police work. The dynamics between the characters, the details, and the author's style all make this book a good read. The violence, gore, and disgusting way in which the killer operates are a little disturbing, making this mystery a semi-thriller. I'd definitely recommend this read.
