I enjoyed Baxter's book 'Voyage' a lot more. This has the same sentimental attitude to the space race technology, Saturn V rockets and Apollo command modules, and the same kind of characters battling to achieve something of lasting value. Without giving too much away, as the heroes leave the safe environment of Earth, it falls apart behind them. The events depicted on Earth seem fantastic and unlikely, even compared to the space travel.
