Sometimes I wanted to scream at these characters to listen to each other, to talk to each other about how they felt, to have compassion, to value each other, to communicate! They all seemed to use their energy protecting themselves. This book deals with the complexities of marital and familial
love and how everyone handles loss in their own way. It's very well written.
Now this book will be sent on to the next person on the ring as soon as I get an address.

Journal Entry 9 by Mamikaem from Maryland Heights, Missouri USA on Wednesday, August 3, 2005
Received this while I was out of town for a few days. This will be my first Anne Tyler book. So many people have recommended her books to me so I am happy to begin with this book ring! I love the notes in the back from previous readers (and also the book marks!) Looking forward to reading this!

UPDATE: 08/20/2005 - finally finished the book ring I had before this and have already delved into this one!

Journal Entry 10 by Mamikaem from Maryland Heights, Missouri USA on Sunday, August 28, 2005
Finished this one this morning with a note of sadness. I suppose because there was a lot of unfinished business, but I guess real life is just like that at times. I loved how the story was written from various points of view. However some things happened but the reader never learns the outcome. For example, the neighbor, Alex, whom Pauline had a thing for. Whatever became of that?

Awaiting the next address before I send it on its way.

Journal Entry 11 by Mamikaem from Maryland Heights, Missouri USA on Thursday, September 1, 2005
I have sent several PMs to those after me, both EnchantedWoods and Digimike and one to Elefteria, the originator of this book ring, but have received no responses! So I will hold onto this book until I receive further notice.

UPDATE: 09/06/2005 - Apparently there must be a problem with the PMS, but at last I heard from Elefteria. This book will be mailed today.

Journal Entry 13 by Digimike from Beekbergen, Gelderland Netherlands on Wednesday, March 8, 2006
I finally read this book. It took me a while to start in it because it is a quite depressive book, however when I finally did, I really liked it. I especially liked the authors writing style, she can describe little domestic things and very subtle points out that because those little things, the marriage is not going to work, even though this couple is also not able to live without each other. Thanks for borrowing this book, Elefteria, I will give it to you next Sunday!

the book is home again! maybe to be released in obcz-samsam.

Journal Entry 15 by Heaven-Ali from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Thursday, April 13, 2006
Arrived this morning, thanks very much. This looks like a really intresting book. I really should have read more Anne Tyler than I have : )

Journal Entry 16 by Heaven-Ali from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Sunday, July 9, 2006
Well I had promised myself a lazy relaxed Sunday, and I've certainly had that. Apart from going out for some food shopping, my lazy Sunday has mainly been about this book. I started it this morning before I got dressed, and have read it a various intervals through the day, to finish it this evening. What a lovely Sunday read Anne Tyler is, I really can't believe I have read so few of her books. There is so much sadness in this novel, and yet it remains so readable, totally engrossing. The characters are frustrating sometimes, I frequently wanted to shake Pauline, and at other times felt for her, as she struggled to understand her husaband and her children. This book has made me absolutely determined to read more by this author. Thank you Elefteria for sending me this book, it has made my Sunday, I'll be going to work tomorrow so much more relaxed now.
