Got this book from my friend Vala. She is generously passing on her books as she cleans out her shelves. From the inside cover: A long weekend in the Poconos is cut short when FBI agents Sherlock and Savich are helicoptered back to Washington, D.C. to lead the investigation into the brutal murder of a Supreme Court Justice. Savich allows Callie Markham, an investigative reporter for The Washington Post, to partner with local Metro Police liaison Ben Raven since she's got the inside track - She's the stepdaughter of the murdered justice. Is the murder a terrorist act? Or is it something more personal? Within 24 hours there's another murder with the same M.O. Savich and Sherlock are up against it this time, following leads that seem impossible to connect to the madness. But are they?
Nah, this book didn't do it. First of all, the entire premise is too far out to believe - the FBI lets a civilian reporter related to the victim tag along on a murder investigation that couldn't have a higher profile. No, would never happen. Law enforcement personnel train long and hard just to get their job. Detectives and FBI investigators are even further qualified. Second, the whole idea that the FBI would let a team of two married investigators work together is not believable. There is no way to be sure their feelings wouldn't ruin some tense situation when they were acting on instinct. Not to mention, they have a young son and it is very risky for them to work together. They risk both being killed if the job goes bad and leaving their son an orphan. The love story between Callie and Ben (no spoiler here, it's hit-you-over-the-head obvious from minute one) is cheese-e and trite. I also didn't get the two totally unrelated story lines in the book (the woman who shows up at Savitch's blow out and the murder). How convenient that the turning point event in the mysterious woman story line happens near Washington, DC.
Not a great book, but not the worst to be stuck with. Easy to read.
