This is the tie-in to the Bafta award-winning movie. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, this is the story of a wounded soldier, Inman, who escapes the army and tries to make his way home to Cold Mountain and to Ada, the woman he left behind when the war began.

I just started reading "Cold Mountain", which rings a lot of bells with me because I have been to Balsam Mountain (= Cold Mountain) in North Carolina. The author writes in his credits, "... a writer's retreat in the N C mountains, where much of the book was written. The long view from the porch is the book's presiding spirit." So this is all quite nostalgic for me too, since I used to live in the South and have travelled to most of these places. However, the book also starts on a very violent note (US civil war), so I don't know if I will be able to stick with it throughout. The start has been bitter-sweet, as is so often the case with the South and its history.

Cold Mountain is in many aspects very enjoyable; it has marvelous descriptions of nature, and I particularly liked the passages about life on the farm, the various chores etc. Sometimes I got the impression, however, that the violence (which figures very prominently in the story) is deliberately exaggerated, just to be sure to make it a very violent book. I will now return it to Fanny Natalie, with many thanks.

I have read the book several years ago and picked up this particular copy for a friend who has not read it yet (as far as I know). I hope to make her a bookcrosser, too - if she likes the book...

A good friend of mine has passed the book on to me,
he got it at a bookcrossers meeting and thought it would be the right book for me. I am going on holiday soon and I will take it with me for rainy days.
