I decided to buy this after hearing good things about it from so many people

Journal Entry 2 by R-W from Rotherham, South Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, May 9, 2005
You have to read this to believe it. The stuff that happens in Augusten's life is shocking, bizarre and sometimes funny. The image of the Finch's stood staring at turds down the toilet is a scene that i hope will go away soon.

Be warbed though, the language in this book is sometimes colourful and the some story lines i found disturbing.

Journal Entry 5 by Tazzell from Laurencekirk, Scotland United Kingdom on Sunday, June 12, 2005
Again another book I read from cover to cover in a day, just couldn't put it down. Augusten's childhood certainly differs from the usual 'american dream' sequence. I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading his other works.

Rob told me to do what I wished with the book so have decided to set up a Bookray with it as it's on a LOT of wishlists. Plus once the last person has read the book they can either set up another bookring/ray or release it :)

Thank you for sharing this book, I must admit, I hadn't expected it to be this good! It reads like a novel and possesses a depth uncommon to biographies. At the same time the narrative is straight-forward and unpretentious, I think the best word to describe it would be 'visual', especially considering the references to pop culture. I guess you could say that every chapter is like a photograph, a vivid portrait of particular moment in time which if observed closely can reveal more than it immediately conveyed. In the end you're left with a mosaic of moments and another, more complete picture which is 'Running with Scissors'. I found it quirky, witty, entertaining and inspiring. I'm looking forward to reading more of Burroughs's books in the future. It's off to Kinedi now... enjoy!

Received from Rosella, thank you. The wee card is a nice idea too. Am looking forward to reading this book.

Journal Entry 13 by wingkinediwing from Rushyford, County Durham United Kingdom on Monday, August 1, 2005
A fantastic weird but wonderful memoir. Sometimes totally shocking - do people really live like that?? - and sometimes very touching and emotional - what really is considered a normal life ?? Crazy people, drugs, gay porn, alcoholics...
Rosella05 described it as 'visual' and that really describes it best I think as I could easily picture the Finch's house, their yukky kitchen and their colourful offspring.
I also liked that Augusten tells us at the end what happened to the characters after he wrote this book.
Thank you very much for organising this great bookring. The book will now be off to the US.

PS Strangely enough I read in the papers today 'Running with scissors' is being turned into a film (to be released 2006) and Scots actor Brian Cox will play Dr. Finch - Wow, what a fantastic choice and talk about visualising the whole book too. It sure will make a very intersting film !

On its way to ThanksMom in the US now

Journal Entry 15 by ThanksMom from Coolidge, Arizona USA on Wednesday, August 24, 2005
The book arrived yesterday and I went right to reading it. Finished it late last night. I don't know how to judge someone's 'true story' except to say it is certainly a compelling read. I find, especially after the Pelzer stuff, that I can't accept all that is written as absolute truth but I do know that there are plenty of strange people in this world.

Journal Entry 16 by ennie from New York City, New York USA on Wednesday, September 7, 2005
received in the book ray. I saw Burroughs speak on TV and he seemed like a very interesting guy.

The book was fascinating, disturbing and funny. I now want to read all his other books. It just happens I have his novel "Sellevision" so that's a good place to start.

Sending on to pashmack

Journal Entry 17 by pashmack from Lake Worth, Florida USA on Monday, October 3, 2005
Arrived in today's mail. I'll get started on it this evening. Thanks, all!

Journal Entry 18 by pashmack from Lake Worth, Florida USA on Monday, October 10, 2005
I've wanted to read this book since I first heard an inverview with the author on NPR. Wow! I have to agree with the previous jounal entries- this book is funny, disturbing, compelling, bizarre, interesting, at times poignant, and even sickening (let's see....."Toilet Bowl Readings" comes to mind). I am surprised that Finch lost his license to practice medicine due to insurance fraud when it seems he could have lost it a hundred other times for many other reasons. What a wild read. Thanks for sharing, Tazzell (and robert-walker).

After a trip to the P.O. today, the book will be on its way to LilB.
(Mailed on October 11, since the post office was closed for Columbus Day on Monday.)

Journal Entry 19 by LilB from Auckland, Auckland Province New Zealand on Sunday, October 23, 2005
It arrived on October 22nd. I have been wanting to read this for ages so am really looking forward to diving in. It may take a couple of weeks to finish and post as I have family coming over from New Zealand this week.
Thanks for setting this book ray,Tazzel.

Journal Entry 20 by LilB from Auckland, Auckland Province New Zealand on Wednesday, November 2, 2005
This was a powerful book. I think the cover quotes overemphasise how funny it is - it is amusing and disturbing in turns. I am intrigued enough after reading this to find out more about the author and seek out his other books. By the way, was anyone else reminded of David Sedaris ? Of course, the family disfunction was on a whole different level, but I was reminded of his earlier books such as Naked when I was reading this.
Sending on to Bookfairy65.

Wow, this is a well travelled book...England, Scotland, USA, Japan and now with me in Australia! I'm impressed, and I love the card that came travelling with it; everyone has signed it along the way...what a cute idea!

I have really been looking forward to reading this book, so thank you to all who have held this book before me for sending it on.

Journal Entry 22 by bookfairy65 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, November 20, 2005
Gosh, where to start?? I find it odd that alot of people say this book is funny. Given, there are a few amusing moments in it but I wouldn't call it funny. Fascinating, compelling, disturbing and sad, but not really funny. I think that perhaps the author has tried to use humour as a way of diminishing how disturbing his childhood actually was.

Having said all that, I'm still glad I got to read this book, and also found it hard to put down once I started reading it. It is just really hard to believe that people really live like that. I'm also glad Bookman is out of Augusten's life, what a vile excuse for a man he is. He is nothing short of a paedophile, and using 'love' as an excuse just doesn't cut it.

As I am the last person on this bookray, I have messaged someone who has this book on their wish-list, and will be sending it to them once I've confirmed their postal details. Thanks again to Tazzell for making this book into a bookray.

I've had this book for rather too long, but I'm finally starting it. Only a chapter in so far so no comments as yet. Once I'm done I'll check the wish lists, and pass on to someone who'd like it.

Journal Entry 26 by tantan from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, January 16, 2007
This was a really fast and page-turning read. The continuous harping about how 'funny' it is supposed to be, both on the cover of this edition, and also the copy of Dry I have here, bothered me a bit. I would call it compelling, disturbing, sad... but definitely not funny.

I will read more by Burroughs. This was a fascinating book, but my cynical side tells me not to believe everything I read.

I'll be checking the wish lists, and passing along.

Certainly bizarre. Fascinating and I felt sorry for the narrator but none of the characters really come across as being likeable and I found that a little offputting. It does tend to get a bit repetitive towards the end also. Otherwise an entertaining read.
