This is the story of Howard, a severely-wounded Vietnam vet, who is unable to speak or write but is of normal intelligence. A former girlfriend leaves her nine-year-old son with him for 8 weeks while she goes into drug rehab. Howard and his house mates care for him, and, in the process, become a caring, cohesive unit.

I wanted to like this book more but became tired of boring descriptions of everyday life.
