From blurb on the back: "A profoundly moving novel, and an honest and true one. It cuts right to the heart of life... The Nolans lived in the Williamsburg slums of Brooklyn from 1902 until 1919. Their daughter Francie and their son Neely knew more than their fair share of the privations and sufferings that are the lot of a great city's poor.."
I have been intending to read this for ages as I know it's considered to be an American classic. I'm so glad I finally got around to it as this is simply one of the best books I've read in ages and certainly the best I've read so far this year.
On one level it's a simple story of families, children, neighbourhoods, growing up etc. but there's so much more to it than that. Some of the characters are so vivid and exciting, the descriptions of the neighbourhood so totally convincing and there are some wonderful observations. The quality of the writing is of the highest order from the child Francie observing old men and musing on time and ageing to the older Francie musing similar themes on the outbreak of the first world war.
It's been a while since I came across anything this good and it thoroughly deserves its 'classic' status.
I will suss out a copy for keeps I think. Any booklover's collection would not be complete without this.
