Victor Mancini has devised a scam to pay for his mother's medical care: pretend to be choking on a piece of food in a restaurant and the person who "saves" you will feel responsible for the rest of their lives. Multiply that by a couple of hundred times and you generate a healthy income.

Journal Entry 4 by Agrippine314 from Ergolding, Bayern Germany on Sunday, October 23, 2005

Journal Entry 10 by stephen-1702 from Leuven, Vlaams-Brabant / Brabant Flamant Belgium on Tuesday, March 28, 2006
Arrived yesterday. read the first 60 pages, looks good, reads well ... .

Journal Entry 11 by stephen-1702 from Leuven, Vlaams-Brabant / Brabant Flamant Belgium on Thursday, March 30, 2006
I liked this book even better than "fight club". Handles all contemporary themes with authenticity, flair, cynism, humor and some hope.

Journal Entry 12 by whitehorsy from Hasselt, Limburg / Limbourg Belgium on Monday, April 10, 2006
I've found "Choke" in my mailbox when I arrived home this evening... together with a surprise book and some funny cards. Thanks stephen-1702!

I've just started reading a rather big book but I'm going to squeeze this one in first. :-)

Journal Entry 13 by whitehorsy from Hasselt, Limburg / Limbourg Belgium on Tuesday, April 18, 2006
Just finished the book tonight and I don't really know what to say. I found it funny and sad at the same time. I cannot say I enjoyed it immensely but it was an enjoyable read... something different from the usual things I read. :-)

Thanks for sharing kiyoitsukikage! I've PM'ed verenka today and the book will be on its way as soon as I receive an address.

Tuesday April 25: sorry for the small delay... the book is on its way to Austria since today

Journal Entry 14 by verenka from Wien - irgendwo / Vienna - somewhere, Wien Austria on Monday, May 8, 2006
The package arrived this morning! I'm looking forward to reading it :-) I have to be strong and not take a peek at the other readers' opinions..
thanks whitehorsy!

Journal Entry 15 by verenka from Wien - irgendwo / Vienna - somewhere, Wien Austria on Monday, May 15, 2006
I like books that are "different" and Chuck Palahniuk certainly manages to surprise me. He also disgusts and disturbs me but unlike for example Bret Easton Ellis it's in a different way in every one of his books I've read. To be honest, I occasionally like to be disturbed :-)
I preferred "Diary" though, because the ending of "Choke" somehow disappointed me. I'd have expected and hoped for something darker and more twisted than that.

I have received bean-frog's address today and will send the book on its way as soon as possible!

Journal Entry 16 by bean-frog from Sheffield, South Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, June 20, 2006
I actually caught this book a week or so ago, I just didn't realise I'd forgotten to journal it until now! Ooops, really sorry! I've almost finished it, and will be sending it on as soon as I have.

On it's way to GateGypsy.

Journal Entry 18 by GateGypsy from Ladysmith, British Columbia Canada on Wednesday, July 19, 2006
It's here! I have one other ring book ahead of it to read, but I'll get on this pretty quick. I should manage it speedily, as I do have 1hr-plus commutes to and from work **laughs**

Thanks so much for sharing!

***************************************************************************

It took me a little while to get into how the characters spoke, but once I wrapped my head around it, I hardly put the book down. I kept trying to guess what the big twist at the end would be, the reversal that utterly surprised yet perfectly explained everything that's trademark to Chuck's books, and I didn't manage it **laughs** It was a surprise, anyways. I quite enjoyed this book. I think I liked this one better than Diary, mostly because Diary was a little too "out there" for my taste at the time that I read it (I actually listened to it on CD audiobook in bits and pieces with my father. I was *really* surprised he finished it! He's kindof old-fashioned.)

I really liked the theme of creating one's own symbols, of re-creating the world in a different language because the current paradigm is very screwed up **laughs** I wonder if Mrs. Mancini ever read Starhawk's "Dreaming the Dark" -- because I recently did, and her women's lib rants echoed Starhawk's sentiments in that book pretty faithfully!

I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on more of his work. Thank you kiyoitsukikage so much for sharing this! I've pm'ed Martyup for an address and will get it along shortly.

Journal Entry 19 by marko167 from Sitges, Barcelona Spain on Friday, October 13, 2006
Received the book yesterday. i have a couple in front of it but should be on its' way soon.

Journal Entry 20 by marko167 from Sitges, Barcelona Spain on Friday, November 24, 2006
The more I read Palahniuk the more I like him. He is certainly the nihilist of the modern day and he writes with the wit, venom and spitefulness of a wasp with a headache.

When you read the words you wonder why this person is not being held in a secure wing for his own and our safety. Then if you read about his upbringing you wonder at his ability to have remained such a sane and stable person.

This book is another wonderful rail against the follies of modern existence, what there is of it. The medical and social hypochondria of society, what there is of it. And the means people go to escape or survive and the wish to be something in a world that has dulled us into servile submission. An excruciatingly funny book. Funny ha ha or funny peculiar is for you to decide.

Every time I read a Chuck Palahniuk book I think it can't possibly get any more weird and disturbing than the last one, yet each book manages to surprise me yet again. Palahniuk has an amazing imagination, and an even more amazing turn of phrase - he manages somehow to make the most mundane situations feel intensely disturbing, while at the same time making the most disturbing situations seem like the only natural response to the world.

[Kiyoitsukikage, what do you want done with this book now? According to your list, I'm the last in the ray - do you want to try and extend the ray further, or should I release it? The NZ bookcrossing convention is coming up in a couple of months, so if you want I could hang on to it until then, and take it to the convention?]

Journal Entry 24 by littlevoice from Epping, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, February 20, 2007
Picked up at the Wellington convention and added to Mount TBR. The previous journals are intriguing, and I expect they would be even more intriguing if I could read German. Palahniuk's work generated some controversy and discussion at the convention. All I know about him is that...um...I enjoyed the "Fight Club" movie...

Journal Entry 25 by littlevoice from Epping, Victoria Australia on Sunday, March 29, 2009
How is it that Chuck Palahniuk can write about such sick, sick puppies, yet somehow make me feel as if there is something wrong with ME for living a conservative middle-class "white picket fence" existence? A tribute to his immense talent, I suppose. Going to release this somewhere where children are unlikely to be able to pick it up...
