There is such a sadness and frustration in reading of this overly-conscientious, loyal English butler - hardly allowing himself to wonder about the worth of his undying dedication to a Lord of perhaps questionable greatness - and not allowing himself the happiness of a private life and love out of (in our opinion) a misguided sense of service and correctness.
A wonderful, atmospheric read.
