This is a nonfiction look at the geology, zoology, and botany of the Java/Sumatra area, and the causes that lead up to the self-destructive eruption of Krakatoa in August 1883. Expect to read a good deal of history, politics, and science in this book, in addition to details of the eruption itself - this is, after all, a Simon Winchester book. For those with a keener-than-average interest in volcanoes and plate tectonics in general, and the Java/Sumatra region in particular, this book is a treasure.

This arrived safely yesterday - hubby forgot to tell me I had a package (when I asked him if I got anything in today's mail, he told me I got 2 the other day and asked me if that wasn't enough - no!)

Thanks for thinking of me, JamesMum. I'll read this and pass it on as soon as I can.

Just to let Jamesmum know, I've finally gotten around to reading this book, and I'm really enjoying it! I'm only about 1/3 finished, but it's going very quickly. I read Winchester's The Meaning of Everything a couple of months ago, and found that one very accessible. It put me in the mind to read another of his books, and I've already got plans for this one. It will be going into my "Books about Things" bookbox when I've finished, for a bit of traveling. Thanks again for sending this to me.

As I'm reading this book, I keep wondering about the 2004 Asian tsunami, and how it relates. So I had to research this and found this article in Wikipedia. Krakatoa is also mentioned in these sections of the article - Signs and warnings and Casualties in historical context.

Excellent, excellent book. I really enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to encountering more of Winchester's work. I've read several of his books now, and it seems as though each one gets better and better. This book was a lot of history, with a good chunk of geology, some zoology and biology, and just a bit of politics thrown into the mix. Very easily readable, and I would recommend this to anyone, especially since the Asian Tsunami of 2004. This book has a lot of interesting information and explanation about what causes these types of events, and the aftereffects.

Many thanks again, Jamesmum. This book will be traveling soon.
