Set in Burma during the British invasion of 1885, this masterly novel by Amitav Ghosh tells the story of Rajkumar, a poor boy lifted on the tides of political and social chaos, who goes on to create an empire in the Burmese teak forest. When soldiers force the royal family out of the Glass Palace and into exile, Rajkumar befriends Dolly, a young woman in the court of the Burmese Queen, whose love will shape his life. He cannot forget her, and years later, as a rich man, he goes in search of her. The struggles that have made Burma, India, and Malaya the places they are today are illuminated in this wonderful novel by the writer Chitra Divakaruni calls “a master storyteller.

Received today! I still have to finish the book I am currently reading and read another ring before I get down to it, though.

I've finally finished the book this morning. I had a couple of others to finish before, and I haven't read as much over the last weeks as I usually do, for different reasons. But the delay wasn't due to the book being boring, on the contrary! I really enjoyed this three-generation epic set across India, Burma and Malaysia - very fascinating. Those were countries and parts of history I did not know much about, and the characters and variety of themes addressed (family, love, war, colonialism, etc.) made for a very interesting read. Thanks for sharing it with us, lauraloo29!

I've PM'd the next person last night and I'm waiting for an address to send it on.

I received a PM from CynthiaA, the next person on the list.

"I've got bad news. The envelope which had originally contained The Glass Palace arrived today -- empty. I believe, stolen. It is postmarked Cordova Tennessee on Sept. 1st.

I'm saddened and disappointed, but I wanted you to know that the previous reader really did ship it."

Sad that it has vanished.
