Journal Entry 1 by Lytteltonwitch from Christchurch, Canterbury New Zealand on Wednesday, March 16, 2005
What made March really significant, what seared it on both our brains, was that Westie met his birth mother Vicki for the first time.
Picked up at the ABC convention (yes, it's going back across the Tasman with me...)

I went to a talk Kate de Goldi gave last year where she mentioned this book (which is why I really wanted to read it), so I knew it was about (spoiler follows, highlight to read) incest (she explained in her talk that she thinks many people don't really know how to express affection other than sexually, and she wanted to explore what happens when two people who need to express their love for each other can't find an appropriate way to do that, and turn to the only outlet they understand), but it's about a lot more than that - friendship, family, loyalty, betrayal, love, and death. I know there was a lot of controversy about this book when it came out, because some people didn't think it was suitable reading material for teens, but it's such a powerful and moving story that I'd happily give it to any teenager to read.

Picked up at FutureCat's birthday dinner at Pancho's Pizza in Bulimba.
I saw this was a New Zealand author, so grabbed it quick. I've only just now read what it's about, and see it's a teenage book - great! I'll enjoy it and my teengers will get to read it too.
