Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
1 journaler for this copy...
As a novel by Philip K. Dick and one of the "SF Masterworks" series, this book is hugely disappointing. It fails at every level.
The setting is post-nuclear holocaust San Francisco. The premises for the new order are very obscure and sketchily presented. People have emigrated to other planets in vast numbers; the few that remain on Earth are slowly dying of radiation poisoning. Animals are so rare that owing them becomes a status symbol - so much so that people buy fake sheep. Rogue androids are hunted for bounty.
The plot is almost non-existent, the characters barely thumbnail sketches. Humour there is none.
It is a tribute to the author that the distinguished sci-fi novelist, Brian W. Aldiss, was prepared to find the words "complex" and "resonance" for the blurb. He is being most generous. The best I can say about this novel is that it is forgettable.
