My theory is that Joe Wambaugh wrote this book as an act of revenge for what Hollyweird did to his previous books. I have read all of his books and this is the funniest. It is a great mystery. The characters are realistic and unbelievable: the street monsters, the narcs, the lead detectives and poor old Cal Greenburg. Even the witnesses and the murderer are memorable: Just Plain Bill, Jackin' Jill, Tuna Can Tommy and the Gun fighter. The only real bad guy is the victim and the reader can't help but feel that it's a good thing he's dead.

It's easy to tell that Joseph Wambaugh knows what he's talking about. That's what makes this book such a great read. Underlying in this book is a mystery story, but primarily this is a book about the lives of a handful of Hollywood cops. The reality of the characters themselves and their surroundings is uncanny. This is not one of those police stories where all the cops are either studs with big guns and can shoot at will, or where every cop is a seedy individual. You can imagine these cops being at a downtown precinct in any city. The mystery itself unfolds as seemingly unrelated events that happen to different cops come together. The way they come together is brilliant.

Can't wait to read it.

I was not disappointed. This is one of Wambaugh's best.

I highly recommend it -- especially to those who have never read this author.
