Perelandra (Space Trilogy (Paperback))

I love - LOVE - this book. It's the second in the Space Trilogy, but I read it years ago by itself, and it's complete on its own. The back says it's "a sharp, sophisticated fantasy that deals with an old problem-temptation-in a new world - Perelandra. The great Dr. Ransom takes on a battle with evil after Perelandra is invaded by the Devil's agent. The outcome of this titanic struggle will determine whether those on the planet face the ascension to perfection or will follow an older world to corruption."
The writing in this is incredible - the visuals, sometimes terrifying. I'm not a science-fiction buff, but this is GREAT. Highly, hugely recommended.
I'm starting a bookring with this; the shipping order is on my bookshelf. The first and third books are great too, and hopefully people will be inspired to read them also - maybe I'll send them around later if I can pick up spare copies.

I received this in the mail, and I found a copy of Out of the Silent Planet. So I think I will read that first before starting this one. I read quickly, though, so it won't take too long. Thanks, bugandbean!
This was a good book! This was better than the first in the series, Out of the Silent Planet. It is a type of Adam and Eve struggle of good versus evil.Ransom must stop Satan from tempting the Mother to disobey Maleldil and save Perelandra from sin.
I understand it is just a scifi story and C.S. Lewis has used Biblical themes for it, but I didn't agree with combining Christianity and Greek/Roman mythology and gods. Also he refers to the eldila of Mars and Venus as gods when they are supposed to be servants of Maleldil (Jesus, God, Holy Spirit).
It is interesting the way Satan keeps at the Lady/Mother. Constantly talking to her, mentally, emotionally, and physically wearing her down, often with things that really don't seem bad outwardly, but lead to something worse. It made me wonder if perhaps that was what he did with Eve. Perhaps he made her think about it, not just one time but for ages, until she finally consented. Who knows?
That aside, I can't wait to find the third book in the series. :)
BTW I added a bookplate to the front of the book, I hope you don't mind, bugandbean! :)

This book is FINALLY in the mail. Sorry for the delay.
Received from gomboggit yesterday. I was a little surprised to find out it was the 2nd in a series, since I prefer to read books in order, but it was clearly my mistake as bugandbean clearly posted it in her journal entry.
Bugandbean: I love your bookplate design! And the painting is marvelous.
This book was a very difficult read for me. It is obviously a "thinking book." I found it hard to enjoy since it was taking me SO LONG to read it knowing that someone was waiting until I finished.
I think this is a series of books I'm going to have to read - and read more than once. There seem to be many different layers to peel back. I got so many insights while reading this one, and I know when I read it a second time there are going to be so many new insights for me it wil be like someone's edited the book all over! LOL
In a way, this book reminds my of The Wind in the Door by Madeleine L'Engle; I didn't like it the first time I read it, but I gave it another chance and I loved what it had to say in the sub-text. Now it's a favorite.

This book had a little adventure of its own with the postal system, but it's back on the straight and narrow for the bookring.
I read the first couple pages on the way to the computer and I am already enthralled with Lewis's diction! And the bookplate is great! I think I am going to copy the idea of printing neatly and beautifully.
11/30 - Finally finished this book. There were several parts I had to read over several times before I could fully grasp the situation. Definitely not a fluffy book and I will be sure to read the first book in the series!

Received in the mail yesterday. Looking forward to reading it - I have a couple of other bookrings first, then I'll get right to it.
Finished reading it the other day. Very interesting & thought-provoking. And I must say that C S Lewis certainly has a fertile imagination. I wish I could write like he did.
Will PM the next person on the list shortly.
