I found this interesting-looking children's book at a local Annie's Bookstop; the "moonrat" is an opossum (and, it seems, a pirate as well), and glancing through it I thought it looked like an unusual and nicely-illustrated book.

And so it is... the pirates (an assortment of critters, from Moonrat himself to squirrels and mink and many other furry types) have acquired so much booty that they're running out of things to steal. So Moonrat sets his sights on the moon itself - and when he and his crew stumble across a strange map that seems to lead them directly to the moon, he sets off to find it. The journey takes them through many seas and many dangers, past a ship's graveyard, and eventually to their goal - or is it? "Perhaps it was not quite as round as he had supposed, and those four flippers were quite unexpected..." The conclusion is dramatic and highly satisfactory. I only wish this book had been around when I was a kid - I would have adored it!

More so than the contents of this book, we loved the whole experience of finding a book that a stranger had left for another stranger; it introduced us to the world of bookcrossing.com, which we thought was a great idea. It's been in our possession for these three months, because we had to wait for the beginning of the sailing season. We plan to leave it on one of the islands off the coast of the Cape, probably Cuttyhunk, which can be reached only by boat. Thank you for leaving this book in the DeCordova Sculpture Garden; it was really nice disovering it on top of one of the pieces there. -Kathrin & Jonathan
