Notes from Underground (1864) is essentially a study of a single character. A tragically flawed and self-destructive, yet compelling man. The character is extremely unlikeable, but his story is told so well.
Most of Dostoyevsky's well known works were written after this one. This is the first of his books that I have read and I am looking forward to more.
This Penguin copy also includes one of his much earlier works, The Double (1846).
