One of my old books I found lurking in the back of Mum's bookshelves and reclaimed.
Loved this book, and have released several copies of it, but I think I'll hang on to this one and re-read it before I let it go.

Just as good as I remembered it. The story of two working-class girls growing up in Christchurch, told in alternating first-person narrative, interrupted occasionally by notes from "The Historian". The moral about ways of achieving happiness is a bit heavy-handed, but otherwise a great read. And of course, it's always fun to read a book set in your own town!

Got this one from Futurecat today - a book set in Christchurch! I have to release it here too!

An interesting account of how sisters struggled to escape their claustrophobic lifestyle and malevolent mother in working class Christchurch. A side of Christchurch that I knew nothing about, having only seen the tourist highlights - it just goes to show how much has changed for women over the last 40 years. It's sad to think that their only hope of escaping poverty was not to work, which just kept them going, but to marry.
