I found this to be an amusing yet insightful look into the state of consumer-level computers. Neal Stephenson makes many interesting points about the use of metaphors in computing (and elsewhere), and I particularly enjoyed his examination of what he termed "metaphor shear".

A slight caveat: I am something of an aspiring computer geek and I really like the writings of Neal Stephenson anyway, so perhaps I'm a bit biased.
