Jane Austen Book Club

Even Tesco is conspiring to feed my book addiction. I went in to buy a stir fry for tea, and came out with this book and several bottles of wine (ozone-nut would have been proud!!). When will the torture of book buying end? I can no longer control my urges....
This was OK, average, i think. I quite enjoyed reading it, but there was nothing that spectacularly drew me to it. I would recommend this for a relaxing read...

Blurb: In California's Sacramento Valley, six people meet once a month to discuss Jane Austen's novels. They are ordinary people, neither happy nor unhappy, but all wounded in different ways, all mixed up about their lives and their relationships. Over the six months they meet, marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and, under the guiding eye of Jane Austen, some of them even fall in love....
The stories I had heard about The Jane Austen Book Club were not all that positive, but I must say that I enjoyed reading it. It is about six totally different people who share a love of Jane Austen's novels. You get to know a lot about their peronal lives and there is quite a bit of character development in the six months the story covers. What I liked best about this novel, though, is that there is so much humor in it. More than once the story made me laugh out loud and the appendix (especially the Questions for Discussion) is downright hilarious.
p.286: Do you ever wish your partner had been written by some other writer, had better dialogue and a more charming way of suffering? What writer would you choose?

This was a lovely book.It was like taking a holiday when I read the book this weekend and had a few glasses of wine.
I think I expected a bit more discussion on Austen, as I´ve been re-reading some of them myself. There was quite a lot of funny bits, I personally enjoyed the dog breeding parts which were hilarious and especially the scene where the dog people met with the science fiction people was funny. Not quite as witty as Austen, but I`ll look forward reading more books from this author.

The book is now on its way to Switzerland. As much as I would have like to keep the book in my shelf I feel it is much better to keep it going. I think that it will be in safe hands. Enjoy Antigone1!
