I hadnt heard of this book when I came across it at my local bookshop. The title grabbed me as well as the byline "A fairytale for grown-ups". The first few pages had me, and I was lucky my husband was with me to drag me out of the bookshop (not before I purchased it!!). Its also written by a fellow Australian
The back reads:
"The Zing family lives in a misguided world of spel books, flying beach umbrellas, and state-of-the-art covert surveillance equipment. There's a slippery Zing, a graceful Zing, and a Zing who runs as fast as a bus. But most significant of all, theres the Zing family Secret: so immense that it draws the family to he garden shed for meetings every Friday night.
I have a Bed made of Buttermilk Pancakes is a grown-up fairytale, and a mystery set in the suburbs. Its about what happens when hope leads to sad and hilarious mistakes and when mistakes lead to hope once again. Its about what happens when you meet a Zing".
Im sure to make this into a bookring when finished.

Of course it didnt end up being nearly as exciting and wonderful as I expected...but then I should have known that because when you have high expectations for something you're normally let down.
Im not sure if its really a fairytale, as the magic promised seemed all too mundane. Actually I think thats where teh author has slipped up - everything is a little too human. This may appeal to osme of you however.
yes yes, I can see the irony within its pages, I can see the attempts at humour and I can see how it could be refreshing... However, it didnt really work for me.

I didn't like this. I didn't even get to page 100 before abandoning the story. I think the thing that put me off in the end was the girl (can't remember her name) saying vagina, vagina, vagina all the time.

Book received today & located in slot 2, ie. only one ahead of it, so I'll get to it soon.
I'm afraid it was more like a fairy tale for children. I had to force myself to the 100 page mark. Once there I skimmed for another 250 or so, dipping in to get the gist of the story & read the final 50. Towards the end the story did become more adult. Perhaps if the tale had been told in 200 instead of 400 pages I'd be more able to recommend it. Interesting in theory but unsuccessful in practice.
Thanks for the opportunity to read it funky. Just awaiting cathyinoz's address now.

Arrived in the post this morning, many thanks. Only one book ahead of it.
I've read somewhere that a contract/promise is struck in the first chapter of a book between the writer and the reader. This is done in order to let the reader relax and go with the writer into the story. A trust thing.
I've just finished the first chapter and started the second and must say I feel uneasy. So far the only thing I've seen in Ch.1 that looks like a promise is the quote "...Marbie thinks about how often children slip into adult worlds, and then...how frequently we find ourselves in theirs."
But it doesn't feel fairytale-ish or child-ish, it feels surreal. Children (and most people) are not comfortable with surrealism, and there is never even a hint in surrealism that 'they will live happily ever after', which of course, is the promise of every fairytale.
Just my first thoughts, I'm pressing on.

Well then, what was that all about?
Strange but NOT surreal. The thing I thought might be the promise of the author was not.
This is a unique story and I'm glad I stuck with it to the end. For most of it I felt like someone in the eye of a tornado. Some piece of something would whiz by and I'd think 'what was that?' or I'd think 'I've seen that before but where? When?' Everything was just a bit far flung. By the time the balloons were mentioned for the second time I had to go back and reread the beginning...I'd forgot all about their first mention. This seemed to happen a lot in this book.
Having said that I was amazed how she eventually gathered all the threads up and tied the story together. She has some beautiful ways of saying things too. And I loved to hate Warren, definitely too good to be true.
Thanks so much Funkybamboozle for the chance to read this.
Will PM the next person on the list and post it off the beginning of the week.
Posted off but I can't remember what day.. sorry.

A very weird book about the 'Zing' family, very confusing but created enough interest to keep me flicking through and read to the end.
Won't mail it off until payday (11th August)

I started reading this but it didn't grab me in the first few pages and I have so much on at the moment that I don't have time to read such a large book. I've contacted Saki and will get it posted this week.
Update 30th Sept: Both Saki and Puppymummy asked to be skipped on this one so it is now going to Sydney2259.

Gosh... this was a hard one... I have too many books on the TBR pile to struggle through a difficult book, so I've given up on this and am sending it to the next participant once I have their mailing details.
Edited to add - sorry for the delay in sending this on, I have been recovering from surgery. It is being posted out this morning (28th Nov)

Oh no - another unexpected bookring!!! Oh well, as it seems the people before me asked to be skipped, perhaps it won't matter if I hold up the ring for a while? Or maybe I'll get to catch up with my reading over Xmas/New Year? Let's hope so - looks like it should be interesting! Thanks sydney2259 and Funkybamboozle!
