I bought this at a used English books shop in Nice, France in February 2005.

I read a lot of books, but had never read an Atwood book before this one. I deliberately avoided her. In my mind, her writing would be stuffy and deliberately Canadian and I always imagined her as middle-aged and dull and conservative. This book really surprised me by how appealing I found it. The pace is very quick and Atwood is sharp and funny and avoids clichés. Oryx & Crake is full of action and suspense and extremely imaginative scenarios and characters. All my preconceptions were proven incorrect... I'm not sure that I'm necessaily going to read Alias Grace any time soon, but I am interested to read The Handmaid's Tale or something like that. This book was one of the better novels I've read this year.
