This was probably the book that, around my 20th birthday, turned me off Fantasy for good. Although it has all the ingedients of a passable fantasy novel (and the author apparently is rather successful in what he's doing), this story is so stale and predictable, the characters so wooden, and the prose so mundane that I never bought a fantasy book again.
(Don't get me wrong -- I still *love* fantasy. I love stories set in worlds that have magic and mythical creatures. I just loathe those cheap series of novels where our hero and heroine, when stripped of sword and spells, could just as well be car mechanics or nursery teachers, and the fantastic elements are not for any dramatic purpose, but solely for the sake of the book being fantasy novel. Ugh.)

Edit 2015: I'm totally delighted this book is still alive and well after 10(!) years, and, better still, travelling again. :)
I had a rather good laugh at my younger self for the previous part of this journal entry, regarding the bit about being turned off Fantasy. Darling me, rest assured: you are no such thing. :) You just developed a bit of a more eclectic taste, and just like CaptainCarrot said in his most recent je, Terry Pratchett is a great choice any day. Only you didn't know him yet when you first registered this book. :)

From Publishers Weekly
Like his previous 11 fantasy novels (Caverns of Socrates, etc.), McKiernan's 12th takes readers to the world of Mithgar with a tale of a grand quest. A vision of bloody world war forces the novel's heroines, Arin, an elf of the mysterious deep woods of Dylvana, and Aiko, a female warrior, to take up an arduous mission to find the missing Dragonstone, a magical gem of immense power, before it can fall into evil hands. Their first stop is a disreputable tavern, where they seek a one-eyed man to fulfill the requirements of a riddle given to Arin in a vision. Since they find two one-eyed candidates, the local drunk and a recently wounded warrior, Arin and Aiko take both along on a roundabout journey full of danger, dragons and other morsels from the standard fantasy menu. Although there is enough detail here to satisfy readers who revel in baroquely textured fantasy worlds, McKiernan seems more interested in pairing off his characters romantically than in the quest itself. This tale of early Mithgar does not stand up to the author's other popular books, but it will keep most hardcore fans of large-scale fantasy entertained nonetheless.

Well, I know people who like the Mithgar series very much, so I want to see for myself - even if the JEs are rather discouraging. Thanks all the same for the chance to read this one!

Well, finally I read this book, but not to the end. The older I am, the more I like my heroes a bit broken oder witty - so it's Tolkien or Pratchett for me anytime!
And now after so many years I send this book on its further travel.
