I'd say this is quite a different take on the Oz's Wicked Witch of the West. She actually seems to be a likeable and sympathetic character. The book contains observations on how looks affect how one is perceived in the world, commentary on social injustices(in this case related to the animal character), and it is just very well written with a very consistently interesting turn of phrase.

I'll never watch The Wizard of Oz in quite the same way. This book adds depth to the fairy tale, making it more political, alleviating the fear (and who wasn't afraid?) of the winged monkeys and the WWW (Wicked Witch of the West). But in its place is the realization that evil lurks in people who are not born green, that sins of omission are as damning as sins of commission, and that Wicked was merely a pawn. Or was she?
