My Father's Scar: A Novel

[Another of my backlogged journal entries; I read this in late October of 2004.]
The book opens with narrator Andy describing his crush on one of his professors at college, but immediately dives in to a series of flashbacks about various significant people and moments in his life. The first of these was his eccentric Uncle Charles, who introduced him to a world of books - and of unconventionality. Sadly, Andy's parents are not happy about Uncle Charles' influence, and Andy's time at home is fairly unpleasant, but at least he knows there are other ways to be.
Later episodes describe more meetings with people who help Andy break the mold, though most of these attempts do not end well; they do, however, help Andy to eventually move on. I also found them a bit choppy, and the return to Andy's present-day turmoil distracting - but as a coming-out/coming-of-age story for young readers it's not bad.

received book. Sorry, I forgot to register until now.
Started reading book.
The small town that Eddie, Evan and the main character live in is very familiar to the small town that I live in. The people treat people who are different like lepers.
Anyway, will make entry after I finish reading.

Very interesting book.
I just wish Evan hadn't run off like that. That's the only thing I didn't like about this book.
It had some funny moments (inside the prof's house), some sad moments (when Evan was beat-up), unusual moments (truth about Billy) and one great moment (when Billy beat-up Andy's father).
