I enjoy reading stories set in China and this was wonderful. It charted the characters entire life, right through from childhood. Some of what she had to deal with was surprising. For someone with a step-parent it was interesting to read about this person's experience. I feel very lucky. Well worth reading!!

Picked up at Turk's on the Drive. I love how it says it was registered in Leeds, England, as it is really seeing the world.

Ultimately, a very sad book. I felt awful for Adeline and her continued manipulation by her family. I can't imagine things got any better with the publication of this book, but I hope it was good therapy for her to have it published!!

This book was waiting for me when I came home from work today. Thank you for sharing it, ajsmom! I've been eyeing this one for a long time, and appreciate knowing that many hands have passed it along to me. Will write for the next reader's addy while I read it.

Journal Entry 13 by FeralReader from Davis, California USA on Tuesday, October 9, 2007
An emotionally-challenging story yet very captivating and hard to put down. I loved reading about Adeline's Grand-Aunt and her Aunt Baba (the real heroines in the little girl's life), and was more sadly perplexed than outraged by the oppression and cruelty she faced under her stepmother's control. It's hard to imagine the complex mix of events, cultural forces, and individual tendencies that led to the miserable upbringing that Adeline and her siblings faced. The author's account of the historical backdrop to her personal story is masterful; I could sense many of her experiences through the rich narrative. Remarkable writing. I hope that when she has been able to detach a bit from the memories that haunt her, Adeline Yen Mah will have more to share with her eager readers.

Off to the next ray participant tomorrow. Thanks again, ajsmom!

I just got this book in the mail today, and shall begin it shortly.

Journal Entry 15 by RockBird from Mission Viejo, California USA on Monday, October 29, 2007
This has been an interesting read... It was a lot more insightful, but also far less optomistic and hopeful book than her other book, which I read as a kid. It's quite depressing in some ways, and very frustrating actually. I kept wondering why Adeline didn't stand up at some point, or walk away from Niang and her father. Why did she passively accept the name chang? Etc.
Anyhow, I'll post this as soon as I can; I hope the next reader enjoys it.

I must say that the prologue (about the inheritance) echoes things in me and it was not a good way to start the reading of this book... Yet I must say that I was really amazed by Adeline's Grand-Aunt and her Aunt Baba.
It was so hard to be a woman at that time !
Adeline had to make due both with her sex and her own family...
How can you build yourself without a childhood ?!?

Let's the book travel on to India now...

Journal Entry 19 by arugh48187 from Highland Park, Illinois USA on Tuesday, December 11, 2007
This book popped in for a brief stay on my bookshelf. I have a couple of rings in front of it, but I am a fast reader so it shouldn't take too long. More later....

Journal Entry 20 by arugh48187 from Highland Park, Illinois USA on Friday, December 28, 2007
This one was pretty good. I can relate to Adeline's need for approval/acknowledgement. Although Niang was truly vicious and with that I have very little experience. When somebody with whom you seek validation is alive and constantly providing the lack thereof, it can be a terrible burden and a great relief when that person dies. In death you can no longer reject. A small comfort, but a comfort nonetheless. I admire Adeline for never giving in and for making so much of herself with very little support. How did she get from physician to fantastic writer though? I would read that sequel.

Thanks for sharing. I have the address of the next reader and it will move on today.
